    SPORTS NEWS FROM CALVIN COLLEGE

    BASEBALL

ALLENDALE * Calvin's baseball team traveled to Grand Valley State
University to claim an 11-9 victory today. The Knights found themselves in an
early hole as GVSU scored two runs in the first and four in the second. The
Knights were not troubled as they came out to score seven runs in the top of the
third inning to take the lead 7-6. Grand Valley scored two runs in the fifth
inning to give them an 8-7 lead, then scored another in the seventh to go up
9-7. In the top of the ninth inning, freshman Kyle Neher hit a two-run single
with the bases loaded to tie the game at nine. After the second out with
runners at second and third, sophomore Darrell Heuker hit a single into left
field, bringing in two more runs and giving the Knights their 11-9 lead. They
closed out the game by putting out GVSU's first three batters. Sophomores
Bryce Weston and Tim Hansen lead the Calvin offense with three hits each. The
defense was led by senior pitcher Matt Schmitz, who pitched all nine innings
giving up 13 hits and seven earned runs while walking three batters and striking
    out nine.

    SOFTBALL

ADRIAN * Calvin's softball team traveled to face MIAA opponent Adrian in a
doubleheader. Game one featured very little scoring as the only two runs came
in the third inning as Adrian won the game 2-0. Calvin was held to three hits
while giving up six to Adrian. Game two featured a 6-3 Calvin win behind
sophomore pitcher Keri Cole. The Knights did all their scoreing in two innings
with two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth. Cole pitched five and
two-thirds innings giving up five hits and two earned runs. The Knights were
also led in hitting by Cole who earned two hits. Sophomore Trisha Balkema and
freshman Abby Konyndyk each added two runs batted in. Freshman Kara Van Kooten
relieved Cole in the sixth inning and went on to pitch one and one-third innings
