SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 10, 2002
BASEBALL
Calvin extended its win streak to eight games with a 10-7 win over
non-conference foe Manchester of Indiana Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
The contest featured a match-up of regionally-ranked teams as Calvin (15-6) and
Manchester (16-6) were both tied for eighth in the first Mideast Regional poll
of the year.
Manchester struck first with three runs in the top of the third inning to build
a 3-0 lead only to see Calvin battle back with five runs in the bottom of the
fourth to go up 5-3. Sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) delivered a
two-run RBI single and sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) a two-run RBI
double in the rally. Freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) then came up with a
two-out RBI single in the sixth to put the Knights up 6-3.
In the seventh, sophomore Bryce Weston (Petoskey) provided the biggest blow of
the game as he crushed a grand-slam homer to left to give Calvin a 10-3 lead.
The home run was the first of Weston's collegiate career and it would also prove
to be significant in the final outcome as the visiting Spartans rallied for four
runs in the top of the eighth to creek to within three at 10-7.
Senior Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) came on to gain the final out of the eighth
however and freshman Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) followed by shutting down
Manchester in the ninth to preserve the Calvin win.
Calvin collected 11 hits in the win with senior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) going
3-for-4 to lead the Knights at the plate. Vreisman also went 2-for-3 to raise
his season batting average to .412. Vriesman's two-hit day also marked his 10th
multi-hit performance of the season. Griffith and senior Matt DeHoek (Grand
Rapids Christian) also picked up two hits apiece.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens a three-game conference series
at Adrian with a single nine-inning game set to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Adrian's
Riverside Park.
