CALVIN SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR APRIL 6, 2002
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
ALLENDALE -- Calvin continued its strong start to the 2002 outdoor track and
field campaign as both teams came up with a number of exceptional performances
Saturday at the Laker Relays hosted by Grand Valley State University.
Calvin's distance and throwing squads were outstanding in particular as the
men's and women's distance crew combined for eight NCAA III automatic or
provisional qualifying performances and one school record while the Calvin
throwers broke one school record and posted two NCAA III provisional qualifying
marks.
In the women's 10,000 meter run, the Knights were led by the terrific trio of
sophomores Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield and Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) and
senior Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo Christian). Lair and Hastings both posted NCAA III
automatic qualifying times with Lair taking first (36:42.15) and Hastings second
(36:51.85) while Boot was third with a provisional qualifying time of 37:26.96.
All three times were career-best efforts. Senior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity
Christian) was also strong in the 5,000 meters as she took first with a
provisional qualifying time of 18:02.8. In the women's 3,000 meter
steeplechase, senior Sara Crowe (Grosse Pointe Woods) established a new Calvin
record in the event, taking fourth with a time of 12:11.3.
In the men's 5,000 meter run, Calvin was simply scintillating as the Knights
took six of the top seven spots and posted five NCAA III provisional qualifying
times. Leading the way for Calvin was senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON) who
took first place with a provisional qualifying time of 14:36.1, missing the
automatic cut by just over a second. Close behind Klooster was sophomore
Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) who took second with a time of 14:36.7. He was
followed by freshman Brian Maat (Holland Christian) in third (14:42.2); senior
Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) in fourth (14:43.2) and senior Justin
Pfruender (Midland) in sixth (14:46.3). Kok, Maat, Hoekstra and Pfruender all
qualified provisionally with their performances with Klooster, Kok, Maat and
Pfruender all establishing career-best times in the process. Also running
strong for the Knights in the 5K was sophomore Dave Haagsma (South Christian)
who was seventh in 15:05.0 and sophomore Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) who took
eighth in 15:19.2.
In the men's 10,000 meters sophomore Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH) took first with
a time of 32:30.56 while freshman Andy Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) captured the 3,000
meter steeplechase in his first-ever appearance in the event, clocking in with a
time of 9:40.3.
In the throws, Calvin junior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian)
continued her impressive recovery from off-season ankle surgery as she took
fourth in the shot put with a school record and NCAA III provisional qualifying
mark of 42-0 1/2. Heading into the season, VanDenBosch had held the school
record at 40-2 1/2, only to see it broken by sophomore teammate Katie Corner
(Grand Rapids Catholic Central) just over a week ago with a mark of 40-3 1/2.
In the discus, Corner took third with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of
138-9 1/2, missing her own school record in the event by an inch. Senior Beth
VanderHeide (McBain Christian) added a fifth place performance in the discus
with a career-best effort of 120-9 while sophomore Carrie Zatarga (Coopersville)
produced a career-best mark of 129-3 in taking eighth place in the hammer throw.
On the men's side, Calvin senior Ryan Moore (Wexford, PA) sparkled in the discus
as he took first with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of
160-9. Freshman Nate Meckes (Bay City) also came up with a career-best mark in
the discus, taking fourth with a throw of 144-9. Meckes then added a
career-best effort in the shot put, taking third with a throw of 49-2.
Another standout for the Calvin women on Saturday was senior Rachel Veltkamp
(Grand Rapids Christian) who was a double-winner in taking first place in the
pole vault (11-3, NCAA III provisional) and triple jump (34-5). Veltkamp also
led off Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay that took first with a provisional
qualifying time of 48.74. Veltkamp was joined on the relay by freshman Sue
Abbring (Highland, IN), junior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) and
freshman Kristen Carlson (Encinitas, CA). VanderLaan also took second in the
100 meter hurdles with a provisional qualifying time of 15.05 and third in the
200 meters (26.25) while Abbring was second in the 200 meters (26.15).
Senior Keith Van Goor (Midland Park, NJ) also captured the 400 meters with a
time of 49.62 and ran a leg on Calvin's 4 x 100 meter men's relay team that took
first in 42.80.
