BASEBALL
Calvin completed a three-game weekend sweep of Albion with 3-1 and 11-2 victory
over the visiting Britons Saturday afternoon. Saturday's doubleheader extended
Calvin's winning streak to seven games and allowed the Knights to improve to
14-6 overall and to 6-0 in the MIAA to remain in first place in the league
standings.
Calvin once again used sterling pitching performances and timely hitting to
collect the pair of victories Saturday.
In game one Saturday, freshman Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) picked up his
second complete game victory of the week as he tossed a two-hitter to outduel
Albion starter Sean Kelly (2-2). Deters (4-2) struck out 10 batters without a
walk and retired 15 successive batters after allowing a run in the top of the
third. Albion (13-8 overall, 2-4 MIAA) scored its only run on a lead-off double
by Jeff Chicoski who later scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Jason Carpenter.
Chicoski's run knotted the score at one. Chicoski would also be the final base
runner for the Britons in the contest.
Calvin had taken a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity
Christian) in the second who brought in senior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids
Christian) who had reached base on a triple to center. Calvin then snapped a
1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Mark Jansen (Denver,
CO) delivered Calvin's first run of the inning on an RBI single to left and
Dykhouse brought in an insurance run moments later on a bases-loaded walk.
Sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) picked up two of Calvin's seven hits in
the game one win.
In game two, Calvin erupted for 10 hits and its second-highest run total of the
season to allow starter Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) plenty of breathing room
as Miedema upped his record to 3-1 on the year. Calvin struck first with a run
in the first but the Britons answered with two runs in the top of the third to
take a 2-1 lead. Calvin countered with seven runs in the bottom half of the
inning, using seven hits and a pair of Albion errors to build an 8-2 lead.
Dykhouse played a key role in the inning with a two-run RBI single while
freshman Tim Hansen (Ludington) also collected an RBI double in the uprising.
Calvin tacked on two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cruise to
the win. Sophomore Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) was superb for the
Knights in the lead-off spot in the win as he went 3-for-4 with a pair of
doubles and two runs scored. Hansen and fellow freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver,
CO) collected two hits apiece as well. Miedema went the distance in gaining his
third complete-game victory of the season, striking out five batters and walking
one while scattering eight hits.
Calvin returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Manchester (IN) in a
non-conference game slated to start at 3:00 p.m..
SOFTBALL
TERRE HAUTE, IN - Calvin closed out a weekend tournament at Rose-Hulman
Institute with a doubleheader sweep of Franklin (IN) Saturday, winning 9-0 and
22-5 in games shortened to five innings.
Freshman Rachelle Heyboer of Fremont High School highlighted the afternoon for
the Knights as she tossed her first career no-hitter in the opener, striking out
two batters and allowing just one base-runner in five innings of work. Heyboer
improved to 5-4 overall with the win. Calvin picked up eight hits and
capitalized on four Franklin errors in the win. Senior Lyndsay Heinkel
(Milwaukee, WI) and sophomore Laurel Sands (Rockford) led the Knights with two
hits apiece with Sands picking up a double.
In game two, Calvin blasted out 16 hits against the Franklin (3-8 overall)
pitching staff with freshman Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK) picking up the win
for the Knights to improve to 2-1 on the year. Seven Calvin players had
multi-hit games with Heinkel leading the way with three hits, four runs scored
