SOFTBALL
TERRE HAUTE, IN -- Calvin split a doubleheader with the homestanding Engineers
of Rose-Hulman Institute Friday night, winning the opener in mercy-rule fashion,
10-6 in six innings, before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
With the split, Calvin moved to 8-8 on the year while snapping a three-game
losing streak in the process. The Knights will take on Franklin of Indiana
Saturday morning in a doubleheader set to begin at 10:00 a.m..
In the opener Friday night, Calvin jumped on the Rose-Hulman pitching staff for
nine hits and 10 runs. Senior Susannah Knust (Grandville) led the hit parade by
going 2-for-3 while sophomore Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) was 1-for-3 with
three RBI's. Meanwhile, freshman Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) hurled her sixth
complete game of the season, striking out two and walking none while allowing
just three hits in six innings of work to up her record to 4-4 on the year.
In game two, Calvin took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Junior Sandy Van Lueewen (Unity Christian) led off the inning with a single and
later scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Knust. A bunt by junior Becky Austen
(Pembroke, ON) then brought in the second run of the inning to stake starting
pitcher Keri Cole to a two-run lead.
The Engineers came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then mounted a
rally in the seventh that started with a Calvin error and followed with a hit
and walk to load the bases. Rose-Hulman then came up with back-to-back RBI
singles to win the game and gain a doubleheader split. Cole (3-3) took the loss
as she allowed eight hits in 6-and-a-third innings of work while striking out
three and walking three. Calvin was handcuffed by Rose-Hulman pitcher Emily
Clark who allowed just two hits while striking out three batters and walking
none.
