BASEBALL
Calvin extended its winning streak to five games and remained unbeaten in MIAA
competition with a 3-1 victory over Albion on a frigid Friday afternoon at
Calvin Field. Friday's contest was the opener of a three-game weekend series
and also allowed Calvin to improve to 12-6 overall and to 4-0 in the MIAA.
Calvin senior pitcher Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) battled through game-time
temperatures in the mid-30's to fire his second complete-game victory of the
year as he scattered four hits over nine innings of work to up his record to 4-2
on the year. The victory was also his third career win against the Britons
against one defeat and raised his overall career won-loss mark to 14-13. Ott
struck out 10 batters without a walk and was also credited with nine assists as
he came up with several fine defensive plays around the mound.
Ott's finest defensive play came in the sixth as he field a suicide squeeze
bunt attempt and flipped the ball on the run to catcher Ben Dykhouse (Grand
Rapids Christian) to nab Albion's Matt Shook at home. Albion (13-6 overall,
2-2 MIAA) scored its only run of the game later in the sixth as Jason Carpenter
drove in Jason Chicoski with an RBI single.
Calvin had taken a 1-0 lead in the third as junior Arrie Eppinga ripped an RBI
single to left that scored freshman Tim Hansen (Ludington) from third base. The
Knights squandered several scoring opportunities in the game however, stranding
11 total base runners. After Albion tied the game at 1-1, Calvin loaded the
bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, only to erase a golden
opportunity to score on a double-play from third to first and ending the threat
on a strike out.
Calvin loaded the bases again in the seventh and finally capitalized as
sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) laced an RBI single down the third
base line to score freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) and senior Mark Jansen
(Denver, CO) with the go-ahead runs. Vriesman had reached base on a one-out
single and moved to third base on a double into the left-center gap by Jansen.
Staked to a two-run lead, Ott then retired the side in order in the eighth and
ninth innings, including a game-ending strikeout to allow the Knights to gain
the narrow win.
Calvin collected nine hits on the afternoon with Eppinga going 3-for-3 at the
plate to raise his season batting average to .447. Vriesman also went 2-for-5
to boost his average to .397. Steve Gordon (2-2) took the loss for Albion.
The two teams will complete the MIAA series with a Saturday doubleheader slated
to start at 1:00 p.m..
