    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 2002

    WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

    OXFORD, OH -- Calvin junior Katie Nagelkirk came up with another school record
    performance on the final day of competition at the NCAA III Championships at the
    University of Miami of Ohio Saturday evening. A native of Zeeland and a
    graduate of Holland Christian High School, Nagelkirk took ninth in the 100
    freestyle with a school record time of 52.31, breaking her own school record of
    52.33 to earn honorable mention All-America honors. Seeded 10th in the 100
    freestyle, Nagelkirk finished 10th in the morning preliminaries with a time of
    52.71. She then lowered her time by a half-second in the consolation final
    while moving up one place. Her ninth place finish in the 100 freestyle was her
    second in the last three days as she had also placed ninth in the 50 freestyle
    Thursday night with a school record time of 23.85.

    Nagelkirk was also part of Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team that earned
    honorable mention All-America recognition by placing 15th with a time of
    3:33.49. Nagelkirk was joined on the relay by seniors Erin Kloostra (Grand
    Rapids Christian) and Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) and junior Mara McGuin (Oak
    Park, IL). The relay had been seeded eighth heading into the NCAA III
    Championship meet.

    "Katie had an outstanding swim in the 100 freestyle," said Calvin women's swim
    coach Dan Gelderloos. "She moved up another place and broke another school
    record. She has a lot to be proud of after having an unbelievable junior year."

    As a team. Calvin finished 27th with 30 points.

    SOFTBALL

    Calvin closed out its spring trip with a 4-2 victory over nationally-ranked
    Dordt of Iowa Saturday morning in Fort Myers, Florida. The victory allowed the
    Knights to finish 6-4 overall on its trip to the grapefruit state.

    Calvin took a 4-0 lead against Dordt, ranked 22nd in the first NAIA national
    poll of the year, with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Keri
    Cole (Mason County Eastern), senior Susannah Knust (Grandville) and freshman
    Laurel Sands (Rockford) all collected RBI singles in the Calvin fourth. Dordt
    (1-1) then came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but would not
    score again as freshman pitcher Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) blanked Dordt the
    rest of the way to allow Calvin to gain the win. Heyboer (2-2) struck out three
    and walked two in lifting her record to 2-2 on the year. Cole picked up two of
    Calvin's seven hits in the contest.

    Calvin returns to action next Thursday when it travels to nationally-ranked
    Grand Valley State for a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:00
    p.m..

    BASEBALL

    Calvin saw its five-game winning streak snapped as the Knights suffered a 1-0
    defeat to Judson College of Illinois Saturday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida.
    With the loss, Calvin closed out its spring trip with a 7-3 record. The Knights
    are scheduled to host Aquinas Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.. at Calvin Field.

    Judson scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Calvin
    outhit Judson 7-5 but stranded eight base runners. Senior Mike Ott (Grand
    Rapids Union) took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year with senior Matt Schmitz
    (Ionia) coming on in relief in the fifth inning. Sophomore Terry O'Neal
    (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) and freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) collected two
    hits apiece in the for the Knights in the loss. With their two-hit
    performances, O'Neal and Vriesman both raised their batting averages above .450.
