WEEKEND SPORTS WRAPUP FOR JANUARY 25-26
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's swimming and diving team posted a 2-1 dual meet record over
the weekend as the Knights defeated Grand Valley State 120-103 Friday night and
then split a pair of conference meets on Saturday, falling to defending MIAA
champion Kalamazoo 120-84 and defeating Alma 150-44.
In its non-conference meet at Grand Valley Friday, Calvin took first place in
five individual events with sophomore Brad White (Dayton, OH) leading the way
with first place swims in the 50 freestyle (21.88) and 100 freestyle (47.50).
Other individual winners for Calvin included freshman Peter Boumgarden
(Naperville, IL) in the 200 IM (2:01.98); junior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids
Christian) in the 200 freestyle (1:47.98) and freshman Ryan Preston (Richmond,
IN) in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.81).
Calvin's 200 medley relay team of junior Jake VanderPlas (Palo Alto, CA),
freshman Dan VanderHeide (Grand Rapids Christian), senior Bryan Linn
(Indianapolis, IN) and White took first place in a time of 1:41.16 while its
200 freestyle relay team of Boumgarden, senior Chris Clark (Traverse City),
freshman Andy Mulder (Holland Christian) and senior Kevin Hawkins (Oakdale, CA)
took first place in a time of 1:29.23.
In Saturday's competition at Kalamazoo, Calvin received several strong
individual efforts. A highlight of the afternoon was Penninga's swim in the
100 freestyle as he took first place by one-hundreth of a second with a time of
48.15. Other winners for the Knights included Boumgarden in the 100 butterfly
(50.58) and Calvin's 200 medley relay team (1:37.99) and 200 freestyle relay
team (1:27.53).
Calvin will close out its dual meet season on Saturday when it hosts Lake
Forest College of Illinois at 1:00 pm at the Bergsma Natatorium.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin women's swimming and diving team also posted a 2-1 dual meet record
over the weekend as the Knights were defeated by Grand Valley State Friday
evening in a non-conference meet 151-92 and then came back to top Alma and
Kalamazoo in conference dual meets by respective scores of 164-75 and 151-69.
With its pair of conference victories over Alma and Kalamazoo Saturday, Calvin
closed out its MIAA dual meet campaign unbeaten at 6-0.
In Friday night's competition against Grand Valley State, Calvin junior Anne
Kuiper (Houghton) took first place in both the 200 IM (2:15.09) and 200
breaststroke (2:32.42). Junior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) was also a
winner for the Knights in the 200 freestyle as she clocked in with a time of
1:58.54. In addition, senior Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian) captured
the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.38 and then teamed up with Nagelkirk,
freshman Courtney Bechler (Holt) and senior Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) to
win the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:40.87.
Nagelkirk then had an outstanding afternoon Saturday at Kalamazoo as she
established new pool records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, clocking in
with respective first place times of 24.51 and 53.57. Both times were also
NCAA III B' Cut qualifying performances. Junior Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) was
also a double-winner for the Knights in the pool on Saturday, taking first
place in the 200 IM (2:20.49) and 500 freestyle (5:28.91). Sophomore Sara
TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) also sparkled for the maroon and gold on the diving
board, winning the one-meter (202.95) and three-meter (221.90) competitions.
TerHaar's performance on the three-meter board was a season-best.
Other winners for Calvin on Saturday included junior Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL)
in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.21); Kloostra in the 200 freestyle (2:01.35) and
Calvin's 200 medley relay team (1:58.23) and 200 freestyle relay team
(1:44.25).
Calvin will close out its dual meet season on Saturday when it hosts Lake
Forest College of Illinois at 1:00 pm at the Bergsma Natatorium.
