MEN'S BASKETBALL
An already-tight MIAA men's basketball race got even tighter Saturday
afternoon as Calvin moved into a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA
standings with Kalamazoo and Hope as the Knights defeated Olivet 91-60 Saturday
afternoon in Olivet's Uton Arena. The victory lifted Calvin's record to 14-5
overall and more importantly to 5-2 in the MIAA. Hope handed league-leading
Kalamazoo its second conference loss of the year Saturday afternoon 75-68 to
create the three-way tie for first place. Albion (4-2 MIAA) stands a half-game
back of the first place logjam.
Calvin will now prepare to host Kalamazoo Wednesday night at 7:30 pm at the
Calvin Fieldhouse. It will mark the first time since the 1994 season that
first place has been on the line between the two rivals during the second of
the MIAA regular season campaign.
In its victory over Olivet (8-12, 2-5 MIAA) Calvin held a 49-26 lead at
halftime behind a blistering 61.3 percent field goal clip. Sophomore guard
Phil Visser (Unity Christian) paced the Calvin attack as he popped in 16 points
in the first half on 4-of-5 three-point field goal shooting.
Calvin then widened its lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as
39 points at one juncture to cruise to the win.
Visser led Calvin with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting while
junior forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) had 15 points and seven
rebounds to stretch his double-figure scoring streak to 37 games. Sophomore
forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) was also superb for the Knights, scoring 12
points and dishing out a career-high seven assists. Sophomore forward Mike
Natelborg (Highland, IN) added a career-high 11 points off the bench.
Olivet was led in scoring by Mike Miller who tallied 12 points and grabbed six
rebounds. Calvin finished with a 57.6 percent field goal clip while Olivet
shot just 29.9 percent from the field. Calvin also connected on 9-of-16
three-point attempts (56.3) and 14-of-20 (70.0) free throw attempts.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin picked up its second straight victory and got back to the .500 mark in
the process with a 73-46 win over visiting Olivet Saturday afternoon at the
Calvin Fieldhouse.
Calvin led 30-22 at halftime behind 10 first half points from sophomore
forward Katie Corner (Catholic Central). The Knights then outscored the Comets
20-4 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to blow the game open and
cruise to the lop-sided win.
Corner finished the contest with a team-high 16 points along with five
rebounds while sophomore guard Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) and freshman
guard Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian) adding 11 points apiece with Ouwinga
notching a new career scoring high in the process.
Junior guard Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) also had a stellar
all-around performance as she dished out a career-high nine assists and added
seven points, seven steals and five rebounds.
Olivet (5-12 overall, 0-8 MIAA) was led by freshman Emily Fixx who pumped in
16 points while Molly Lipton chipped in with 10 points.
Calvin finished with a 44.1 percent field goal clip and was 19-of-26 (73.1) at
the free throw line. Olivet shot just 38.5 percent overall and committed 37
turnovers.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it journeys to Kalamazoo for a key
conference game slated to start at 7:30 pm at the Anderson Athletic Center.
