MEN'S BASKETBALL
A week after its lowest scoring performances in 20 years, Calvin rebounded to
record one of its best offensive scoring performances of the season as the
Knights rolled to a 95-76 victory in front of more than 3,400 fans at the
Calvin Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The victory lifted Calvin's record to 11-4 overall and more importantly to 2-1
in the MIAA as the Knights pulled into a three-way tie for second place in the
league standings with Albion and Hope. Kalamazoo moved into sole possession
of first place in the MIAA standings with a 75-72 overtime victory at Albion
to improve to 3-1 in the league.
In Saturday's victory over Adrian, Calvin was paced by the hot scoring hand of
sophomore guard Kevin Broene as the Grand Rapids Christian High School product
floated in a career-high 29 points on the strength of a 10-of-14 shooting
performance including 3-of-3 from three-point range and 6-of-6 at the free
throw line.
Broene scored 10 of his 29 points in the opening seven minutes in helping
stake Calvin to a 37-24 halftime lead. Calvin shot 41.9 percent from the
floor in the first half but limited Adrian to 34.6 percent shooting in the
first half including just 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from three-point range.
The second half turned into a track meet as the two teams combined for 107
second half points with Calvin outscoring Adrian 56-51 in the second 20
minutes of play. Calvin shot a blistering 67.9 percent from the field in the
second half while Adrian shot 48.6 percent in the second half.
In addition to Broene's 29-point effort, Calvin received 12 points and eight
rebounds from junior forward Jeremy Veenstra as the Kalamazoo Christian High
School graduate stretched his double-figure scoring streak to 33 games.
Junior forward Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian) and sophomore forward Chris
Prins (Escondido, CA) added 11 points apiece for the Knights. Adrian was led
in scoring by junior Steve Brooks with 11 points while junior Dan Walter added
10.
Calvin shot 54.2 percent overall including 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from
three-point territory. Adrian shot 42.6 percent from the field and 30 percent
(9-of-30) from three-point range. Calvin also held a 39-28 rebounding
advantage.
Calvin will now prepare for a rugged week as the Knights travel to Albion
Wednesday at 7:30 pm and then journey to the Holland Civic Center next
Saturday to face the Flying Dutchmen of Hope at 3:00 pm.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin suffered its first loss to Adrian since 1993 as the Knights fell 69-59
Saturday afternoon at Adrian's Merillat Center.
Calvin led for much of the first half and held a 24-22 lead after a pair of
free throws by freshman Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian) with 6:53 left in the
half. The Bulldogs proceeded to score 15 unanswered points over the final
6:53 of the half however to take a 37-24 lead. Calvin committed four
turnovers and went 0-for-8 from the field in the final six minutes of the
half.
Adrian maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half with Adrian
(9-5 overall, 3-1 MIAA) building its biggest lead at 68-49 with 2:49
remaining. Calvin (7-7 overall, 2-2 MIAA) then outscored the Bulldogs 10-1 in
the closing minutes to complete the margin.
Calvin was led in defeat by junior center Emily Beard (Southfield Christian)
who notched her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10
rebounds while sophomore forward Katie Corner (GR Catholic Central) pitched in
11 points.
Defensively, Calvin had no answer for Adrian junior Ra'Sheida Edwards who
poured in 24 points and collected 18 rebounds with juniors Sarah Vinke and
Lisa Butts contributing 11 and 10 points respectively.
Adrian outrebounded Calvin 41-33 and held the Knights to 40.4 percent field
goal shooting while the Bulldogs shot 47.4 percent from the field. Adrian was
also 14-of-21 from the free throw line (.667) while Calvin was just 11-of-21
(52.4 percent) at the line.
Calvin returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Albion for a 7:30 pm
contest.

MEN'S SWIMMING
Calvin picked up its second MIAA dual meet victory of the year with a 133-84
win over Albion Saturday afternoon at Calvin's Bergsma Natatorium.
Calvin took first place in 10 events with sophomore Brad White (Dayton, OH)
winning the 1,000 freestyle (10:28.96) and 100 backstroke (55.62). Junior
Brian Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) was also a double-winner for the Knights
taking first place on both the one and three-meter diving boards.
Other individual winners for Calvin included junior Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA)
in the 200 freestyle (1:51.93); junior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian)
in the 200 IM (1:59.62); freshman Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the 100
butterfly (52.12); senior Chris Veltman (Duarte, CA) in the 500 freestyle
(5:10.24) and sophomore Mike Schuitema in the 100 breaststroke (57.27).
Calvin also took first place in the 200 medley relay (1:39.78) and in the 200
freestyle relay (1:29.48).
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Calvin remained unbeaten in MIAA dual meet competition as the Knights scored a
137-106 victory over visiting Albion Saturday afternoon at the Bergsma
Natatorium.
Calvin took first place in six individual events with junior Katie Nagelkirk
(Holland Christian) winning the 200 freestyle (1:59.25) and 500 freestyle
(5:27.88). Other individual winners for Calvin included sophomore Sara
TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) on the three-meter diving board; senior Erin Kloostra
(Grand Rapids Christian) in the 50 freestyle (25.45) and junior Anne Kuiper
(Houghton) in the 100 freestyle (56.13) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.76).
Calvin also took first place in the 200 medley relay (1:55.22) and 200
freestyle relay (1:44.96).
Calvin will host St. Mary's in an MIAA dual meet next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
