WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin used a solid shooting effort as well as a dominating performance on
the glass to knock off MIAA foe St. Mary's College, 75-52. An enthusiastic
crowd propelled the Knights as they boosted their record to 7-6 overall and
2-1 in the MIAA.
Things remained close in the opening minutes but the Knights blew it open
using a 9-2 run over a span of 5:36. The run was capped of with a jumper by
sophomore Katie Corner (Catholic Central) building the lead to 18-9 with 8:54
remaining in the first half. The Knights used red hot shooting to take a 38-24
advantage at halftime. Calvin scorched the nets for 52.0 percent connecting on
13-25 shots from the floor.
The second half would prove to be more of the same for Calvin as they built
its lead to 25. Only connecting on 13-42 (31.0 %) shots in the second half,
the Knights turned up the defense, holding the Belles to 7-28 shooting from
the floor.
Calvin also dominated on the glass, garnering a 48-33 advantage over the
course of the game. The Knights also forced St. Mary's to commit 20 turnovers,
while only surrendering 14 of their own. Calvin also held a slight advantage
at the free throw line. The Knights connected on 22-26 (84.6 %) while the
Belles dropped 16-19 (84.2 %) from the charity stripe.
The balanced Calvin scoring attack was led by Corner as she netted 14 points
and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian) added 10
while Emily Beard (Southfiled Christian) and Kristen McDonald (West Catholic)
each contributed nine points.
Calvin will return to action Saturday when they travel to face Adrian
College. Tip off is 3 PM.
