SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, JANUARY 5

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin saw its five-game win streak snapped in decisive fashion Saturday
afternoon at Kalamazoo's Anderson Athletic Center as the Knights
suffered a 65-42 defeat to Kalamazoo College.

The loss was Calvin's worst defeat since a 93-70 defeat to Hope in 1996
while its scoring total was its lowest total since a 45-36 loss to
    Olivet in 1982.

Calvin trailed just 28-22 at halftime despite shooting just 30.4 percent
in the first half. Sophomore Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) then
opened the second half with a field goal that brought the Knights to
within two at 28-24 but the rest of the game would prove to be a
downhill struggle for the maroon and gold. Kalamazoo came back to take
a double-digit lead at 36-24 before the Knights rallied with a brief 5-0
spurt that pulled them to within seven at 36-29. Kalamazoo freshman
Erik Rhinehart then nailed a three-point shot form the top of the key
that put the Hornets up 39-29. Calvin would never slice the deficit
under double-digits the remainder of the contest.

Kalamazoo (9-6 overall, 1-1 MIAA) kept Calvin check behind a strong
defensive effort and a disciplined halfcourt offensive scheme as the
Hornets milked the shot clock on possession after possession. Kalamazoo
made good use of the ball as well, scorching the Anderson Athletic
Center nets for a 52.1 percent field goal clip including 54.2 percent in
the second half. Conversely, Calvin (10-4 overall, 1-1 MIAA) shot just
26.9 percent in the second half to finish with a season-low 28.6 percent
    overall clip.

In addition, the Hornets outrebounded Calvin 39-27 including 29-17 on
the offensive glass. Calvin was led in defeat by junior Rob Dykstra
(Tri-unity Christian) who tossed in 12 points while junior forward
Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) had 10 points to extend his
double-figure scoring streak to 32 games. Kalamazoo was led in scoring
by Nathan Burns who tallied 11 with Kevin Baird adding 10.

Calvin will now break until next Saturday when it hosts Adrian at 3:00
    pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

A spirited comeback effort in the second half came up short in the
closing minutes as Calvin dropped a 71-58 decision to visiting Kalamazoo
Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin led for most of the first half before the Hornets (10-3 overall,
1-1 MIAA) ripped off a 15-5 scoring run to take a 36-29 halftime lead.
Kalamazoo would then extend its lead to ten points at 56-46 with 7:57
remaining before the Knights (6-6 overall, 1-1 MIAA) mounted a furious
    comeback.

Over the next three minutes, Calvin would outscore Kalamazoo 10-2 to
close to within two points at 58-56 with 4:29 to play. Calvin used
full-court pressure defense to get back into the game as the Knights
forced Kalamazoo into four turnovers that resulted in Calvin points. A
layup by sophomore guard Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) closed out the
run to bring Calvin to within two points at the 4:29 mark. Kalamazoo
answered with a 9-2 run of its own however, capped off by a
back-breaking three-pointer by junior guard Allisa Johnston that put the
Hornets up 67-58. The Hornets then used four free throws from senior
Amanda Weishuhn in the final minute of play to lock the game away.

Both teams struggled from the floor as Kalamazoo shot 37.3 percent
overall and Calvin 33.3 percent. The Hornets were able to gain the
advantage on second and third opportunities as they outrebounded the
Knights 38-29 including 16-12 on the offensive glass. Calvin also
committed 20 turnovers in the loss while Kalamazoo turned it over 21
times. Both teams used the free throw line to their advantage as the
Hornets were a sizzling 96.6 percent (28-of-29) at the line while Calvin
was 22-of-27 for an 81.5 percent clip.

Sophomore Katie Corner (Catholic Central) was the only Calvin player in
double figures in scoring with 11 points along with eight rebounds.
Wolthuis added nine points and five steals while junior guard Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian) collected eight points, six steals and
    three assists.

Kalamazoo was led by Weishuhn who had 21 points and seven rebounds while
Johnston had 13 points and senior forward Nikki Grubb 12 points and
    eight rebounds.

Calvin returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts St. Mary's (IN)
at 7:30 pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse
