    MEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin held off a determined effort by a gritty Olivet squad as the
Knights recorded a 66-58 victory over the Comets in the MIAA opener for
both teams Thursday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Since Calvin entered the MIAA for the 1953-54 season, the Knights are
37-12 in league openers including 6-0 under current head coach Kevin
    Vande Streek.

Calvin (10-3 overall, 1-0 MIAA) extended its win streak to five games
despite a season-low 40 percent shooting performance against a pesky
Olivet defensive effort. Calvin used the three-point shot to gain the
win as the Knights were 9-of-26 from beyond the arc for a 34.6 percent
clip while the Comets were 2-of-13 (15.4) from three-point range.

Calvin led 33-28 at halftime and struggled to put Olivet away in the
second half as the Comets remained within four points at 51-47 with 9:05
left to play. Senior point guard Jon Potvin (Gladstone) then delivered
a clutch three-pointer that put the Knights up seven. After the Comets
closed to within five at 54-49, Potvin delivered with another clutch
shot, draining a pull-up jumper from the baseline that put Calvin up
    56-49.

Olivet would never get closer than five points the rest of the way as
the Knights closed out the win.

Sophomore forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) led Calvin in scoring
with 18 points to stretch his double-figure scoring streak to 13 games.
Sophomore guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) was also in
double-figures with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting while junior forward
Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) chipped in with 10 points and
eight rebounds to extend his double-figure scoring streak to 32 games.

Olivet was led in scoring by Michael Dyson who had 16 points with
Patrick Dermyer adding 13 and Mike Miller 12.

Olivet shot just 37.1 percent overall and was outrebounded by Calvin
46-29. Junior center Jon VanderPlas (Kalamazoo Christian) came off the
bench to lead the Knights in the rebounding department, ripping down a
game-high nine boards to go with four points.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a
3:00 pm game at the Anderson Athletic Center.
