WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The win couldn't have come at a better time. Coming off a three game
losing streak and opening up the MIAA portion of its season at Olivet,
Calvin came up with a much needed victory, 64-60.
Cavlin (6-5 overall, 1-0 MIAA) broke open a tight two point game in the
first half with a 20-6 run over an eight minute span. The run propelled
the Knights to a 35-23 halftime advantage.
The Comets (5-5 overall, 0-1 MIAA) would close the gap in the second
half, using a 14-4 run to narrow the lead to 49-45 with 9:50 to go.
Olivet again narrowed the lead to four points with 3:42 left, 58-54.
Calvin sophomore Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) helped the Knights
respond with a clutch three-pointer, raising the lead 62-56 with 2:30
left in regulation. With 1:10 left Olivet answered with a three-pointer
of its own, coming from the hands of Lindsey Brunworth, which narrowed
the lead to 62-59.
The Knights would put the game on ice, 64-59 with a key jumper by Calvin
junior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) with :43 seconds left.
Calvin closed out the game with a solid defensive stand to solidify the
win.
Calvin was led by Wolthuis as she netted 18 points and collected three
steals. Sophomore Katie Corner (Catholic Central) added a career-high 15
points, which included a 7-8 performance from the free-throw line. Dyk,
freshman Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian), and senior Tara Bergsma
(Calvin Christian) all contributed 7 points, while Bergsma also added
eight rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Junior center Emily Beard
(Southfield Christian) pitched in with 11 rebounds.
The Knights held the advantage in shooting percentage, 54.5 percent to
44.2 percent. Calvin was out rebounded 41-38 in the game, including
26-19 in the second half. Calvin also committed 26 turnovers and shot a
woeful 13-23 (56.5%) from the free-throw line.
Calvin will return to action Saturday, January 5 at home against
Kalamazoo. Game time is 3 p.m.
