Calvin once again found out that there's no place like home as the Knights
snapped a two-game losing skid with a 95-76 victory over non-conference rival
Ferris State in front of more than 2,000 fans at the Calvin Fieldhouse Saturday
afternoon.
Calvin upped its record to 5-2 on the year while the Division II Bulldogs
dipped to 1-5. Since the Calvin Fieldhouse opened for the 1965-66 season, the
Knights have compiled a won-loss record of 326-63 at home for a winning
percentae of .839. After Saturday's victory, the Knights are also 8-0 at the
Calvin Fieldhouse against Ferris State.
After taking a 39-33 halftime lead, Calvin used a 12-4 run early in the second
half to build a double-digit lead it would maintain the rest of the way.
Sophomores Mike Natelborg (Highland, IN) and Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) sparked
the Calvin run as Natelborg tossed in six points off the bench in the spurt
while Prins had five in the stretch.
Calvin secured the victory by connecting on 15-of-19 free throw attempts inside
the final five minutes of regulation.
Calvin was led in scoring by junior Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) who
tossed in 24 points along with eight rebounds, two assists and two blocked
shots. Prins was next for the Knights wtih 19 points while senior Jon Potvin
(Gladstone) came up with a season-high 12 points along with four assists. All
12 of Potvin's points came at the free throw line as he was 12-of-14 at the
charity stripe. Sophomore guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) also
continued his strong play for Calvin as he picked up 10 points and a career-high
eight rebounds. Sophomore center Ryan Smalligan (East Grand Rapids) also came
up with a stellar performance in his first start at the varsity level as he
scored five points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
Ferris State was led in scoring by freshman Carlteton Epps who scored 21 points
and collected 10 rebounds. Twin brother Corey Epps was close behind with 18
points while senior Marcus Wallace added 13 points and four assists.
Calvin outrebounded Ferris State 44-31 and shot 52.2 percent from the field
including 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three-point range. Ferris State shot 37.1
percent overall and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three-point range.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to Cornerstone for
round two of the "Battle of the Betline." Tuesday's game will begin at 7:30
pm.
