Men's Soccer
GOSHEN, IN - Calvin picked up its fourth straight win with a 5-2 non-conference
victory at Goshen College Monday evening. The Knights (8-4-2 overall) took
control early with four first half goals, en route to taking a 4-0 halftime
lead.
Freshman Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian) put the Knights on the board
in the 12th minute of play as he popped in his third goal of the season.
Sophomore Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids) then scored in the 18th minute off a
double-assist from sophomores Eric Krauss (Grosse Pointe) and Marcus Decker
(Grand Rapids Christian). Junior Steve Bishop (Western Michigan Christian) then
converted a feed from senior Matt Slenk (Kalamazoo Christian) in the 25th minute
and senior Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) followed with a goal in the
32nd minute with senior David VanderLugt (Kalamazoo Christian) drawing an assist
on the play.
Goshen (3-13 overall) came back to cut the deficit in half, scoring in the 46th
minute and in the 52nd minute of play but the Maple Leafs would not score again
while the Knights would tally one more time with sophomore David DeBoer (Western
Michigan Christian) cranking a shot past Goshen goalkeeper Nick Stolftzfus with
just under 10 minutes left to play. Bishop and sophomore Geol Scheirman
(Broomfield, CO) both chalked up assists on the DeBoer goal.
Calvin outshot Goshen 12-8 with senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) collecting a
pair of saves in one half of play while junior Justin Bouw (Unity Christian)
picked up two saves in the second half. Stoltzfus had 8 saves for Goshen in
defeat.
Calvin will now prepare to host rival Hope Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm in a
key conference matchup.
