CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR October 17
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin remained unbeaten and home and created a three-way tie for first place
in the MIAA standings with an exciting 27-30, 30-17, 30-27, 24-30, 15-12 victory
over rival Hope Wednesday evening at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin, Alma and
Hope are now tied for first place in the conference standings with 9-3
conference records with each school having two league matches left to play
before the conference tournament begins October 30.
Calvin improved to 15-9 overall and to 6-0 at the Calvin Fieldhouse this year
with Wednesday night's win which snapped a four-match losing streak to Hope.
Strong defensive play and timely serving propelled Calvin to the victory as the
Knights amassed 21 total blocks and 15 service aces. The Knights also finished
with a .267 team hitting percentage over the course of the match while the
Flying Dutch (13-12) had a hitting percentage of .123.
Junior outside hitter Cassie Christopher of Fruitport High School had one of
her finest performances in a Calvin uniform in the win with 18 kills and six
service aces. Freshman outside hitter Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) was also
stellar for the maroon and gold with 14 kills, 10 digs and four blocks.
Sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) was also impressive with 11 kills, two
blocks and a match-high 20 digs, many of which came in acrobatic fashion.
Balkema also provided the match-winning kill with a soft tip into the Hope
middle with the score 14-12 in game five. In addition, junior middle hitter
Melissa Pell of Fremont High School tallied 11 kills, six aces and five blocks
along with a hitting percentage of .320. Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz
(Prinsburg, MN) helped set the table for the Knights with 59 assists. Freshman
Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) chipped in with seven kills and a match-high six
blocks.
Hope was led by Laura Hahnfeld with 15 kills and 10 digs while Martha Luidens
had 12 kills and six blocks. Setter McKenna Troyan also tallied 51 assists and
eight digs for the Flying Dutch.
Calvin will host Albion Friday at 6:30 pm in an MIAA conference match. The
Knights will then close out their MIAA regular season schedule next Tuesday with
a match at Kalamazoo.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin stretched its win streak to six games and picked up its eighth shutout
victory of the year with a 3-0 win at rival Hope Wednesday afternoon in Holland.
With the win, Calvin improved to 13-4 overall and to 9-2 in the MIAA. With its
13 victories, Calvin matched the fifth-highest single-season win total in school
history.
Ranked eighth in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin took a 1-0 lead at halftime on
an unassisted goal by senior Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian) in the 13th
minute of play. Calvin extended its lead to 2-0 just over two minutes into the
second half as senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) banged in her seventh goal
of the year on an assist from junior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian).
Dyk then scored her team-leading 23rd goal in the 63rd minute of play, receiving
a corner kick from senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) and heading
in a shot past the Hope goaltender.
Calvin finished with a 12-10 shots at goal advantage while junior Leah
VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) and freshman Kristy Jamieson (Aurora, CO) combined
on the shutout in goal with VanderPloeg picking up five saves and Jamieson one.
Calvin will now prepare to host nationally-ranked Albion Saturday at noon in
front of a Parent's Day Crowd. The league-leading Britons will bring a 15-0
overall record and 10-0 conference mark into Saturday's game.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin saw its four-game win streak come to an end as the Knights suffered a
2-0 defeat to rival Hope Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin dropped to
8-5-2 overall and to 5-3 in the MIAA with the defeat while Hope stretched its
win streak to six games and improved to 13-1-1 overall and to 6-1-1 in the
MIAA.
Both teams came up with a handful of quality scoring chances in the first half
but could not capitalize as the Knights and Flying Dutchmen were scoreless at
halftime. Calvin outshot Hope 7-5 in the first half and had its best scoring
chance come midway through the first half as sophomore Mike Standfest (Elk
Rapids) collected a served ball into the box and headed a shot past Hope
goaltender Marcus Voss that struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced
straight down and was then cleared out of the box.
Hope then broke through in the 48th minute minute as Andrew Riker one-timed a
cross from the left wing by Adam Chaffee into a wide-open net. Hope doubled its
margin with a goal in the 59th minute as Tim Kelly was able to squirm free up
the middle and blast a shot past Calvin goaltender Matt Thelen (Grand Haven)
from point-blank range.
Hope finished with a 13-11 shots at goal advantage including 8-4 in the second
half. Thelen collected seven saves in defeat for the Knights while Voss had
four saves for Hope in gaining the shutout win.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Albion for a 1:30 pm
contest.
