CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 10, 2001
VOLLEYBALL
ADRIAN, MI - Calvin picked up a hard-fought four-game victory at Adrian College
Wednesday evening as the Knights defeated the Bulldogs 30-24, 19-30, 30-27,
34-32 at Adrian's Merillat Center. With the victory, Calvin improved to 14-8
overall and to 8-2 in the MIAA. League-leading Hope improved to 8-1 in the MIAA
with a three-game victory over Albion Wednesday to remain in first place in the
league standings.
A much-improved Adrian squad was looking to move into a tie for second place
with a victory over Calvin Wednesday evening as the Bulldogs were just a victory
back of the Knights in the conference standings. Adrian dropped to 9-8 overall
and to 6-4 in the MIAA with Wednesday night's defeat.
Junior middle-hitter Melissa Pell (Fremont) had a huge match for the Knights as
she collected 20 kills and a career-high nine blocks including two solos. Pell
also recorded a sparkling hitting percentage of .395 in 43 total attacks.
Junior outside hitter Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) also came up with 15 kills
and four blocks while senior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) tossed out 55
assists and served three aces. Sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) and
freshman Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon) were also stellar in the back row as
Balkema produced 18 digs while Brenneman tallied a match-high 20 digs off the
bench. Freshman Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) chipped in with seven kills and
6 blocks.
Lauree Durmyer and Lacey Marvin led Adrian with 14 kills apiece while setter
Joanna Weigel tossed out 52 assists.
Calvin returns to action Friday evening as it travels to third-place Alma for
another important MIAA match on the road. Friday's match will begin at 6:30 pm
at the Cappaert Gymnasium. Alma (7-3 MIAA) will also be looking to move into a
tie for second place in the conference standings with a victory over Calvin
Friday evening.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams remain nationally-ranked as the
women's team is ranked third and the men's team ranked sixth. The women's team
is ranked third for the second consecutive week while the men dropped two spots
from the fourth place ranking a week ago.
Moravian of Pennsylvania is the top-ranked team in the women's poll while
Wisconsin-LaCrosse remains the top-ranked team in the men's poll.
