CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 9, 2001

    MEN'S GOLF

KALAMAZOO, MI - Calvin's bid for its first-ever MIAA championship came up short
as the Knights took third at the final MIAA outing of the year to finish third
in the final league standings. Tuesday's outing was hosted by Kalamazoo at the
Thornapple Creek Golf Club. Heading into Tuesday's competition, Calvin sat in
second place, just five strokes back of league-leading Hope and three strokes
    ahead of third place Olivet.

Two-time defending MIAA champion Hope stepped up to the challenge on Tuesday
however as the Flying Dutchmen took first place in convincing fashion with a
team score of 393 strokes while Olivet took second with a team score of 402
strokes. With its first place finish Tuesday, Hope finished 34 strokes ahead of
Calvin in the final league standings and 17 strokes ahead of Olivet. Calvin's
    final MIAA season-average was 399.0 strokes-per-round.

Calvin along with many of the other league schools struggled with the gusty
winds and glassy putting surfaces on Tuesday as just one Calvin player fired a
sub-80 round. Junior Tony Karsten (Holland Christian) was Calvin's leader
Tuesday with a round of 79 which was good for fifth place invidually. Hope had
three players fire sub-80 rounds led by conference medalist Eric Wohlfield who
fired a sizzling round of 73 to lead all scorers.

"We're obviously disappointed with our finish today because we felt that we were
capable of playing much better," said Calvin men's golf coach Jim Timmer. "At
the same time, give a lot of credit to Hope for a terrific performance. Coming
into the final round, we knew that the team that stepped up the most would be
the team that would win the league championship. This afternoon, Hope was the
team that stepped up and delivered."

Calvin's second-best finisher on Tuesday was senior Jon Kalmink (Grosse Pointe
Woods) with a round of 80. With his finish on Tuesday, Kalmink finished third
in the final individual league standings with an average of 78.0
strokes-per-round to earn a spot on the All-MIAA 1st team for the first time in
his career. Senior Bryan Hoekstra (Grand Rapids Christian) was Calvin's
third-best finisher with a round of 83. Hoekstra also earned a spot on the
All-MIAA 1st team for the first time in his career as he finished fifth in the
final individual standings with an average of 79.0 strokes-per-round. Kalmink's
    average of 78.0 strokes-per-round matches the fifth-best single-season average
in Calvin men's golf history while Hoekstra's average of 79.0 strokes-per-round
    matches the 10th-best average.

Rounding out Calvin's finishers were sophomore Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) with
an 83; senior Adam Derrickson with an 88 and freshman Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA)
with a 91. Karsten, Brandsma and Derrickson all earned spots on the All-MIAA
    2nd team as Karsten finished seventh in the final league standings (80.4);
Brandsma ninth (81.3) and Derrickson 12th (81.7). It marked the second
consecutive year that Karsten has earned a spot on the All-MIAA 2nd team.

With five individuals earning either 1st or 2nd team All-MIAA honors, Calvin
produced its highest single-season all-conference total in school history. It
also marked just the second time that Calvin has placed two individuals on the
All-MIAA 1st team, joining the 1965 season when Calvin placed two individuals on
the All-MIAA 1st team including league MVP Dave Tuls.

In addition, Calvin's final team average of 399.0 strokes-per-round was the
second-best single-season average in school history, surpassed only by Calvin's
1998 average of 398.1 strokes-per-round. Calvin also had four individuals earn
medalist honors during the season (Hoekstra twice, Derrickson once and Kalmink
once) and established a course-record score of 382 at the fifth league outing of
    the year.

"We had a very successful year when we look back on the entire season," said
Timmer. "We had wonderful senior leadership and we will miss the four seniors
who will be graduating. We also had several excellent performances from our
underclassmen this fall so the future for our team is bright."

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin soccer moved its win streak to three with a 3-0 shutout of the St. Mary's
Belles Tuesday afternoon at Calvin field. With the victory, Calvin reached the
double-digit plateau in victories for the 13th consecutive year as the Knights
improved to 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the MIAA.

Calvin used a pair of goals from junior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian)
to give the Knights a 2-0 cushion at halftime.

Dyk notched her 18th goal of the year as a result of great passing and unselfish
offense, tucking the ball in the right side of the net. Junior defender Heather
VanVugt carried the ball up the right side on a strong rush and passed the ball
to the left goal line where sophomore Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) put it to the feet
of Dyk. The Knights second goal came from the familiar 1-2 combination of senior
Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) and Dyk, as Onderlinde slide a pass
through the middle giving Dyk the wide open breakaway.

Calvin lone goal of the second half came from senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin
Christian) as she collected a unsettled ball in the box and went to goal,
sliding the ball just to the right of the goalkeeper's grasp.

Calvin outshot the visiting Belles 16-7 with junior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg
(Unity Christian) collecting three saves in goal for the Knights.

Calvin will return to action on Thursday afternoon as they travel to Anderson
    (IN) for a 4 PM non-conference match.
