CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 6, 2001
MEN'S GOLF
With one outing left to play, it's a three-team race.
In one of the tightest MIAA men's golf chases in recent memory, Calvin, Olivet
and Hope are locked in a three-way battle for the MIAA title. Defending MIAA
champion Hope remains in first place with 2376 strokes but Calvin sits just five
strokes back at 2381 while Olivet is three strokes back of Calvin and eight
behind Hope with a total of 2384 strokes.
The MIAA title will be decided on Tuesday at the final league outing of the year
which will be hosted by Kalamazoo at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. The
exciting three-team horse-race was set up by Saturday's (#6) MIAA outing hosted
by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club which saw Olivet win with a team score of
389 strokes and move right back into the MIAA title picture. Meanwhile, Calvin
made up nine strokes on league-leading Hope with a second place team total of
401 strokes. Host Adrian took third with a score of 406 strokes while Hope was
fourth with a score of 410.
Calvin senior Bryan Hoekstra of Grand Rapids Christian High School earned
medalist honors for the second consecutive outing as he fired a round of 74 to
finish a stroke ahead of Eric Wohlfield of Hope and Rick Gibbons and Mike Dinner
of Olivet. Hoekstra was one of two Knights to record sub-80 rounds Saturday
afternoon as senior Jon Kalmink (Grosse Pointe Woods) recorded a score of 79.
Calvin's third man was senior Adam Derrickson (North Muskegon HS) with a round
of 81 while junior Tony Karsten (Holland Christian) was Calvin's fourth man
(83); sophomore Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) Calvin's fifth man (84) and senior
Jason Rop (Western Michigan Christian) Calvin's sixth man (90).
Olivet's first place performance was fueled by three sub-80 rounds as Scott
Miller carded a round of 76 to join the rounds of the 75 fired by Gibbons and
Dinner.
Tuesday's MIAA outing at Kalamazoo is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. In the
history of MIAA men's golf competition, Olivet has captured a league-leading 17
MIAA titles while Albion is second with 16 titles; Kalamazoo is third with 15
titles; Alma fourth with 12 titles and Hope fifth with eight league titles.
