CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, October 3, 2001
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin snapped a two-game losing skid with a 7-0 shutout victory over visiting
Olivet Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field. Junior forward Tricia Dyk of
Western Michigan Christian notched her fifth career hat-trick including her
second of the season in the victory as she collected three goals and two
assists. With the three-goal, two-assist effort, Dyk moved into third place on
the Calvin career list for goals and points. Dyk now has 45 goals and 111
points in her career. Kristin Penzotti (1991-1994) stands in second place in
goals and points with 58 career goals and 152 career points. In addition, she
also moved into sixth place on the Calvin career list for assists, boosting her
career total to 21.
Calvin (8-4 overall, 5-2 MIAA) broke a scoreless tie on a goal by junior Lindy
VanHaitsma (Grand Rapids Christian) in the 32nd minute of play with Dyk drawing
an assist. Sophomore Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) was the beneficiary of another dish
by Dyk as Haan collected a headed ball sent her way by Dyk and slipped a low
shot in the far corner of the net to put the Knights up 2-0 with 10:16 left in
the first half.
Less than a minute later, Dyk scored her first goal of the game on a
sensational rush up the left wing that saw her beat three defenders and blast a
shot past the Olivet keeper just inside the near post.
Dyk then scored goals in the 53rd and 59th minute to put the Knights up 5-0
with senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) collecting an assist on
Dyk's final goal of the game. Sophomore Becky Welsh (Delaware, OH) completed
the scoring with back-to-back goals just over a minute apart late in the
contest. Sophomore Sarah Derrico (Cannonsburg, PA) drew an assist on the first
Welsh whistle while freshman Colleen Ford (Salem, OR) picked up an assist on the
second Welsh blast.
Calvin outshot the Comets (6-3 overall, 3-2 MIAA) 26-13. Junior Leah
VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) and freshman Kristy Jamieson (Aurora, CO) combined
on the shutout victory for the Knights with VanderPloeg recording four saves and
Jamieson three saves.
Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts Alma at noon.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin once again climbed above the .500 mark on the season, this time
accomplishing the feat in dramatic fashion as the Knights pulled out a 2-1
sudden-death overtime victory at Olivet Wednesday afternoon.
Despite outshooting the host Comets, Calvin (5-4-2 overall, 3-2 MIAA) found
itself trailing 1-0 late in the contest as Olivet broke through on a breakaway
goal by Ludivic Toussaint in the 74th minute of play. Calvin fought back to
send the game into overtime however as sophomore Eric Krauss (Grosse Pointe)
whipped in his third goal of the year off an assist from sophomore Sam DeYoung
(Western Michigan Christian) with five minutes left in regulation.
In the sixth minute of overtime, the same Calvin combination came up big again
as DeYoung took a pass from Krauss and drilled in the game-winning "golden
goal."
Calvin outshot the Comets (3-6 overall, 1-3 MIAA) 28-14 with senior goaltender
Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) collecting six saves for the Knights.
Calvin will travel to Alma on Saturday for an MIAA contest scheduled to begin
at 1:30 pm.
