CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 26, 2001
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
For the second consecutive night, Calvin was stretched to a five-game
conference match but this time it ended in defeat as the Knights dropped a
30-28, 22-30, 30-27, 8-30, 15-13 decision at Albion Wednesday evening.
The loss was a costly one for Calvin as the Knights dropped two wins behind
league-leading Hope (5-0), falling to 5-2 in the MIAA and to 11-4 overall.
The Knights were beset by 19 service errors on the evening while Albion had
just four service errors, helping the Britons (9-7 overall, 2-4 MIAA) claim
narrow wins in game one, three and five.
Sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) collected a career-high 21 kills in
defeat along with 23 digs, six blocks and four service aces. Junior Cassie
Christopher (Fruitport) added 17 kills and a career and match-high 37 digs while
junior Melissa Pell (Fremont) had 15 kills and 8 blocks and freshman Kristin
DeGroot (Tulare, CA) 11 kills and 14 digs. In addition, senior setter Sara
Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) collected 56 assists and 12 digs for the Knights.
Amy Corrigan led Albion with 20 kills and 22 digs while Sarah Morin had 11
kills and 22 digs.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens play at power-packed weekend
invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater. The tournament will also include

Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Simpson of Iowa and Wisconsin-River Falls. Calvin will open
the tournament Friday with a 4:00 pm (EST) match against River Falls and will
then take on Central at 6:00 pm (EST). On Saturday, Calvin will meet Whitewater
at 1:00 pm (EST) and Simpson at 3:00 pm (EST).
