Pair of Calvin Women's Soccer Players Named MIAA Players of the Week
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Two members of the Calvin women's soccer team have earned
MIAA Player of the Week honors as junior forward Tricia Dyk has been named MIAA
Offensive Player of the Week while junior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg has been
named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week.
A native of Grand Haven and a graduate of Western Michigan Christian High
School, Dyk is receiving MIAA Player of the Week accolades for the third time in
her collegiate career. Dyk scored seven goals and picked up three assists in
leading Calvin to victories over Aquinas, Adrian and Hope last week. Dyk scored
the game-winning goal in all three Calvin victories. She opened the week by
scoring both goals in Calvin's 2-0 win over Aquinas. She then notched the fifth
hat-trick of her Calvin career with a three-goal effort in an 11-0 win over
Adrian Wednesday afternoon. In a 4-0 victory over Hope Saturday afternoon, Dyk
scored a pair of goals and picked up one assist. Dyk's second goal against Hope
was her 41st career goal, allowing her to move into a tie for fourth place on
the all-time Calvin list for goals. Dyk currently leads Calvin in goals,
assists and points with 12 goals, five assists and 29 points. In conference
play, she is tied for the MIAA lead in goals scored (7) and is tied for second
place in points (17). Dyk is a two-time 1st team All-MIAA selection and was
named to the Great Lakes All-Region second team last fall.
VanderPloeg hails from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High
School. A two-year starter in nets, VanderPloeg helped backstop Calvin to three
shutout victories last week, as she went the distance in the victories over
Aquinas and Hope and split time in goal in the win over Adrian. In 225 minutes
of action last week, VanderPloeg collected 19 saves and recorded a
goals-against-average of 0.00. In Saturday's win over Hope, VanderPloeg was
stellar as she racked up 11 saves. VanderPloeg has allowed eight goals this
year and has a season goals-against-average of 1.09. She also has 58 saves on
the year. Last fall, VanderPloeg recorded a Calvin single-season record 156
saves while sporting a goals-against-average of 1.37.
Calvin is currently 7-2 overall and in sole possession of first place in the
MIAA standings with a 4-0 conference mark, two points ahead of 3-0 Albion and
Kalamazoo. Calvin will carry a six-game win streak into a Tuesday showdown at
defending MIAA champion Albion. A year ago, the Britons edged the Knights in a
pair of one-goal games, defeating the Knights 2-1 in sudden-death overtime at
Albion and then defeating the Knights 1-0 at Calvin. Tuesday's game at Albion
will begin at 4:00 pm. Calvin will then travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday for
another key conference matchup. Saturday's game at Kalamazoo will begin at
noon.
