    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin women's soccer team remained on top of the MIAA
    standings and stretched its winning streak to six games with a 4-0 shutout
    victory over rival Hope Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin improves to
    7-2 overall and to 4-0 in the MIAA while Hope falls to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in
    the MIAA with the loss.

    Calvin junior Tricia Dyk of Muskegon Western Michigan Christian High School
    scored a pair of goals and collected one assist to lead the Knights in the win.
    With her pair of goals, Dyk boosted her career total to 41 goals, allowing her
    to move into a tie for fourth place on the all-time Calvin list with Erin Henkel
    (1993-1996). Senior midfielder Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) also helped
    celebrate her 21st birthday by scoring a pair of second half goals to account
    for Calvin's scoring. Senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) also
    picked up a pair of assists while junior Lindy VanHaitsma (Grand Rapids
    Christian) also picked up one assist.

    Calvin outshot Hope 23-17 and led 1-0 at halftime. Senior Leah VanderPloeg
    (Unity Christian) posted her fourth shutout victory of the year as she
    registered 11 saves for the Knights.
     
    Dyk put Calvin on the board in the 39th minute as she collected a pass from
    Onderlinde in the box, whirled and fired a shot past Hope the Hope goalkeeper.
    Calvin then struck 47 seconds into the second half as Bergsma took a pass from
    Dyk in the Hope penalty box and fired a low hard shot underneath the arms of
    Ayres. Dyk then gave the Knights a three-goal cushion as she scored with just
    4:57 left in regulation. Dyk broke free for the goal off a lead pass from
    Onderlinde and then slammed a shot into the left-hand corner of the Hope net for
    her 41st career goal and her 12th of the year. Bergsma closed out the scoring
    for the Knights as she was able to head in a chip pass from junior Lindy
    VanHaitsma with just 1:04 left to play.

    Saturday's victory was Calvin's third shutout win.

    Calvin will now prepare to face defending MIAA champion Albion next Tuesday in
    a key conference match. A year ago, Albion handed Calvin a pair of one-goal
    defeats, defeating the Knights 2-1 in overtime at Albion and then 1-0 at Calvin.
     Tuesday's game at Albion will begin at 4:00 pm.

    MEN'S SOCCER

    HOLLAND, MI - Calvin saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end as the
    Knights suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 sudden-death overtime loss at rival Hope
    Saturday afternoon. Calvin falls to 3-3-2 overall and to 1-1 in the MIAA with
    the loss.

    Calvin took an early 1-0 lead on a first-half goal by sophomore Jason
    Kastrounis (Sewickley, PA). Kastrounis was able to score in the 8th minute on a
    rebound shot off a punch-out by Hope's goalkeeper. Hope (7-0-1, 1-0-1 MIAA)
    came back with a pair of goals in the first half with Tim Kelly scoring in the
    31st minute and Ed Heubner scoring in the 43rd minute.

    Trailing 2-1, Calvin battled throughout the second half was finally able to
    knot the score up at 2-2 on a goal by sophomore Geol Scheirman (CO) in the 83rd
    minute of play with sophomore Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan Christian) drawing
    an assist on the play. In overtime, Hope broke free for the game-winner in the
    99th minute of play with Bryan Loomis scoring on a play that originally begin on
    a free kick from the far sideline.

    Hope finished with a 20-14 shots at goal advantage with senior Matt Thelen
    (Grand Haven) collecting five saves for the Knights.

    Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 4:00 pm.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

    HOLLAND, MI - The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country
    teams swept their way to first place performances Saturday morning at the MIAA
    Jamboree hosted by Hope College at the Buys Athletic Complex.

    Ranked fifth in the latest NCAA III Women's Cross Country Poll, the Calvin
    women's cross country team achieved a perfect score of 15 points, claiming the
    top seven spots including 13 of the last 16. Hope took second place with 70
    points. Calvin ran in a tight pack as just 22 seconds separated its top-five
    runners. Senior Erinn Boot of Kalamazoo Christian High School led the way for
    the Knights, taking first place with a time of 18:57 while senior Lindsay
    Carrrier (tri-Unity Christian) was close behind, taking second with a time of
    18:59. Rounding out Calvin's top seven were junior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI)
    in third place (19:02); sophomore Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield) in 4th place
    (19:16); senior Laura Medema (Grand Rapids Christian) in 5th place (19:19);
    sophomore Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) in 6th place (19:32) and freshman Mimi
    Speyer (Grand Rapids Christian) in 7th place (19:42).

    "We had a very dominating performance which was exciting to see," said Calvin
    women's cross country coach Nancy Meyer. "The course was a little wet and muddy
    but our women held together in a tight pack. We feel that we are on the right
    track to achieving something special at the end of the year."

    The defending national champion Calvin men's cross country team took first
    place with a score of 21 points, finishing 30 points ahead of second place
    Albion. Ranked third in the latest NCAA III Men's Cross Country Poll, Calvin
    was led by senior Dan Hoekstra of Kalamazoo Christian High School who churned
    his way to a first place time of 25:57 while senior teammate Justin Pfruender
    (Midland) was second in 26:12. Hope senior Dylan Wade was third (26:17) and
    Albion freshman Nick Mockeridge fourth (26:27).

    Calvin took six of the top eight spots including 11 of the top 14. Rounding
    out Calvin's top-seven were senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON) in fifth place
    (26:41); senior David Ritsema (Denver, CO) in sixth (26:57); freshman Andy
    Yazzie (Gallup, NM) in seventh (27:00); sophomore David Haagsma (South
    Christian) in eighth (27:10); sophomore Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) in
    10th (27:12) and sophomore Matt Edwards in 11th (27:18).

    "We took a step forward in our performance today," said Calvin men's cross
    country coach Brian Diemer. "We struggled to hold our pack together last week
    at the Parkside Invitational so it was encouraging to see our guys hold together
    more consistently this week. Dan Hoekstra looked very good today and Justin
    Pfruender also ran very well. Some of the other guys are starting to fill some
    of our gaps as well. Kris Koster in particular was one guy who stepped up to
    fill a gap today. We have a long way to go but we are on the right path."

    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin suffered its first conference defeat of the year and then came back to
    defeat a non-conference rival as the Knights moved to 9-3 overall while falling
    to 4-1 in the MIAA. Calvin opened Saturday with a 22-30, 30-25, 30-22, 30-27
    loss to rival Hope before coming back to defeat Cornerstone in a non-conference
    match 30-19, 30-17, 20-30, 28-30, 15-12.

    The loss to Hope dropped the Knights a victory behind the Flying Dutch who
    improved to 7-6 overall and to 5-0 in the MIAA.

    Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) produced an inspiring effort in
    defeat against Hope as she amassed 43 assists and 23 digs. Junior Cassie
    Christopher (Fruitport) was credited with 14 kills while sophomore Trisha
    Balkema (Highland, IN) chipped in with three service aces.

    Against Cornerstone, Calvin was led by the stellar performance of junior
    Melissa Pell (Fremont) as she recorded 16 kills, five service aces and five
    blocks. Ahrenholz was also superb, registering 54 assists, 15 digs and three
    service aces. Balkema and freshman Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) added 11 kills
    apiece with Balkema also picking up 16 digs.

    The match with Cornerstone was the first five-game match of the year for the
    Knights. Pell accounted for Calvin's final two points. With Calvin holding a
    13-12 lead in game five, Pell gave the Knights a two-point lead with a quick hit
    kill. Pell then served up the game-winner with her fifth ace of the match.

    Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 6:30 pm
    conference match.
