    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 19, 2001

    MEN'S SOCCER

    Calvin stretched its unbeaten streak to five games and its winning streak to two
    games with a 7-0 victory at Adrian Wednesday afternoon in the conference opener
    for both teams.

    The victory also lifted Calvin above the .500 mark for the first time this year
    as the Knights improved to 3-2-2 overall.

    Calvin led 4-0 at halftime behind first half goals from senior David VanderLugt
    (Kalamazoo Christian), junior Aaron Bouw (Unity Christian) and sophomores Eric
    Krauss (Grosse Pointe) and Jason Kastrounis (Sewickley, PA). The goal by
    Kastrounis was the first of his collegiate career. In the second half freshman
    Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian), Bouw and senior Joel Tlachac (Grand
    Haven) scored. The goal by VandeKopple was the first of his collegiate career.

    Picking up assists for the Knights were sophomores Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan
    Christian), David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian), David Buursma (Western
    Michigan Christian), Marcus Decker (Grand Rapids Christian), Krauss and
    sophomore Paul Groenewal (Wycoff, NJ).

    Calvin held a 38-8 shots at goal advantage. Senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven)
    and junior Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) split time in nets for the Knights to
    combine on the shutout victory with Thelen collecting one save and Bouw picking
    up two saves.

    Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Hope for a 1:30 pm
    contest.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    Calvin stretched its win streak to five games and remained unbeaten in
    conference play with a 11-0 victory over Adrian Wednesday afternoon at Calvin
    Field. The Knights improved to 6-2 overall and to 3-0 in the MIAA to move into
    sole possession of first place in the league standings, two points ahead of 2-0
    Albion and 2-0 Kalamazoo.

    Senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) led the way for Calvin with a
    career-high four goals along with two assists. Junior Tricia Dyk (Western
    Michigan Christian) also collected a hat-trick with three goals on the
    afternoon. Also scoring goals for the Knights were senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin
    Christian) and freshman Christian VanderJagt (Pittsford, NY), Colleen Ford
    (Salem, OR), Linnea Butler (Olympia, WA). The goals by VanderJagt, Ford and
    Butler were the first of their collegiate careers.

    Calvin led 8-0 at halftime and held a 40-2 shots at goal advantage. Junior Leah
    VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) and freshman Kristin Jamieson (Aurora, CO) split
    time in nets to collect the shutout victory.

    Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the Flying Dutch of Hope at
    noon.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin remained locked in a first place tie in the MIAA standings with a 30-21,
    30-18, 30-24 conference victory over Alma Wednesday at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
    Calvin improved to 9-2 overall and to 4-0 in the MIAA with the win. Hope kept
    pace with Calvin in the league standings, improving to 4-0 in the MIAA with a
    three-game win over Olivet Wednesday. Calvin will travel to Hope Saturday
    morning for an 11:00 am match at the Dow Center.

    Calvin was led in the victory by junior Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) who
    picked up 11 kills and 12 digs while sophomore Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) had
    10 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Junior Melissa Pell (Fremont), freshman
    Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) and freshman Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian)
    collected seven kills apiece with DeGroot chalking up 12 digs, Kuipers a
    match-high five blocks and Pell a match-high six service aces. Junior Jessica
    Huisjen (Lansing) added 13 digs off the bench.

    Senior Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg) contributed 45 assists from the setter
    position.

    Calvin will also face Cornerstone on Saturday in a non-conference match Saturday
    afternoon in Holland.

    MEN'S GOLF

    Calvin finished in fourth place at the first MIAA outing of the year, recording
    a team score of 406 strokes. The outing was hosted by Olivet at the Bedford
    Valley Country Club. Hope took first place with a team score of 391 strokes.

    Sophomore Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) was Calvin's top finisher with a round of
    76 while senior Bryan Hoekstra (Grand Rapids Christian) was next with a round of
    79. Senior Jon Kalmink (Grosse Pointe Woods) was Calvin's third man, carding a
    round of 81 while junior Tony Karsten (Holland Christian) fired a round of 84
    and senior Adam Derrickson (North Muskegon) added a round of 86. Freshman Mike
    Bratt (Lynden, WA) closed out Calvin's finishers with a round of 93.

    Calvin returns to action tomorrow when it competes at an MIAA outing hosted by
    Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.
