CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 5, 2001
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Using what head coach Jerry Bergsma described as a "solid all-around team
effort," Calvin opened its 2001 MIAA campaign with a 30-23, 30-10, 30-13 victory
at Olivet Wednesday evening.
The victory was the second in five days over Olivet as the Knights (4-1 overall)
had defeated Olivet last Friday at the Hornet Invitational in Kalamazoo.
Junior middle-hitter Melissa Pell (Fremont) had a strong match for Calvin up
front as she tallied a team-high 12 kills along with six blocks. Junior Cassie
Christopher (Fruitport) also contributed eight kills and four service aces.
Christopher was part of a strong Calvin serving attack as freshman Kathy
Brenneman (North Muskegon) and junior Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) tallied
five service aces apiece while senior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) also
collected four service aces. Ahrenholz also directed the Calvin passing attack,
recording 25 assists along with nine digs.
Calvin returns to action Friday when it hosts Adrian in a MIAA match scheduled
to begin at 6:30 pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
