CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 7, 2001
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin got back to the .500 mark on the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Friday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin will now carry a 2-2 overall record into next Tuesday's MIAA opener against Alma.
In Friday's contest against Richard Stockton, Calvin dominated the opening 20 minutes, producing several excellent scoring opportunities. Calvin was unable to score early on however as Richard Stockton goaltender Sarah Williams thwarted the Knights with a number of outstanding saves.
The Ospreys (1-3) then took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 29th minute. Calvin came back to tie the score at 1-1 on a goal by sophomore Sarah Derrico () with under 10 minutes left in the half. Derrico's goal was the second of her collegiate career and came off a corner kick in which she bent a low shot that eluded Williams and found the far corner of the net.
Calvin then threatened throughout the second half with senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) nailing the goalpost twice * once on a header off a free kick and the second time off a 25-foot turn-and-rip blast from the center of the field. The Knights then broke through with just 7:49 left in regulation as junior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) got loose on a rush up the middle and sent a well-placed pass on the ground to senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) who hammered in the shot from in close to put Calvin up 2-1.
Calvin then made the Onderlinde goal hold up to gain the victory.
Calvin finished the contest with a 22-11 shots at goal advantage with junior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) collecting five saves for the Knights.
Tuesday's game with Alma will begin at 4:00 pm at Calvin Field.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin battled Ohio Northern University to a 1-1 overtime tie in a first day game of the Calvin J. Bergsma Memorial Tournament Friday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Calvin (1-2-1) struck first, scoring on a goal 5:32 into the contest as junior Charles Telep (Sewickley, PA) collected a chip pass from senior Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) and slid a shot past a charging Ohio Northern goaltender and inside the near post.
The Polar Bears (0-1-2) came back to tie the game on a goal in the 58th minute as Zach Wright scored on a header off a cross from Matt Ellis.
Neither team would score again in regulation, sending the contest into overtime. Calvin nearly scored a game-winning "golden goal" with two minutes left in overtime as senior David VanderLugt (Kalamazoo Christian) ripped a shot from the 30-yard line that bent over the hands of the ONU goaltender and off the far post.
Calvin finished the contest with a 16-14 shots at goal advantage. Senior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) collected five saves in goal for the Knights including a leaping deflection of a Polar Bear bullet headed for the back of the net midway through the first half.
