MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field team are in first place after one day of competition at the MIAA Track and Field Championships hosted by Hope College. After four events, the Calvin men hold a three-point edge over Alma with 38 points while the Calvin women have a 51-point lead over second place Hope with a total of 81 points.
The Calvin women crowned three league champions and set two new meet records on Friday highlighted by the performance of junior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) in the 10,000 meters as she churned her way to a career-best and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 37:09.45 in winning the event. The time was also a new MIAA record. Carrier led a 1-3-6 Calvin finish in the event as freshman Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) was third and sophomore Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian) was third.
The Knights also produced a sizable point total in the discus as freshman Jamie Febo (Sparta) won the event with a throw of 131-0 with freshman Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central) taking second (129-1/2); junior Beth VanderHeide (McBain Christian) taking fourth (121-8) and sophomore Liz Frens (Grand Rapids Christian) taking fifth (120-8). In the long jump, Calvin junior Lindsay Mulder repeated as MIAA champion in the event for the third straight year as she uncorked a leap of 18-8 ½. Mulder was followed on the Calvin squad by freshman Marielle Zylstra (Mendon, MA) who was fourth (16-3); junior Mae Baber (Brandon, WI) who was fifth (15-11 ½) and sophomore Rebecca Baber (Brandon, WI) who was seventh (15-3 ½).
In the high jump, Calvin came up with a 2-3 finish as sophomore Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) took second (5-2) with freshman Stephanie Holwerda (Unity Christian) taking third (5-0). VanderLaan also shattered a Calvin and MIAA record in the prelims of the 100 meter hurdles as she posted a time of 14.96. Her time shattered the previous Calvin record of 15.03 set by Jennifer Rottschafer in 1997 and the MIAA record of 15.02 set by Riki Carson of Adrian in 1992.
In the men's competition, Calvin used a 1-2-3-5 finish in the 10,000 meters to help build its three-point lead over Alma. Freshman David Haagsma (South Christian) continued his torrid spring pace as he took first place with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 31:32.18. Freshman Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) followed in second place with a time of 32:35.05 while freshman Abe Huyser-Honig (Grand Rapids Christian) was third (33:04.85) and sophomore Brian Paff (San Diego, CA) fifth (34:05.01).
Calvin also 2-4 in the shot put with sophomore Nick VanderPlas (McBain Christian) taking second (46-1) and junior Ryan Moore (Wexford, PA) taking fourth (43-4). Senior Phil Sikkenga (Wheaton, IL) also had a big afternoon in the prelims as he broke his own MIAA record in the 110 hurdles with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 14.46. Sikkenga then clocked in with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 21.48 in the 200 meters, missing his own MIAA record in the event by one-hundreth of a second.
