Aaron Wiers Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week

For the first time in his career, Calvin senior Aaron Wiers has been named MIAA
Pitcher of the Week. A 6-4 lefthander from Chicago, Illinois, Wiers tossed his
third shutout victory of the year in a 1-0 victory over Alma Saturday afternoon
    at Calvin Field.

In the victory, Wiers struck out nine batters and walked just one while allowing
just two hits. The victory upped his overall season mark to 5-2 while lowering
his earned run average to 1.50.

In league play, Wiers is 4-0 against the competition with an MIAA-leading 0.87
    ERA.

With his nine strikeout against Alma, Wiers boosted his career MIAA strikeout
total to 108 to moved into a tie for third place on the all-time MIAA strikeout
list with 1997 Alma graduate Andy Jacobsen.

Wiers has also excelled at the plate and in the field for the Knights this year.
Overall, Wiers is batting .356 with a team-leading 23 RBI's and four homeruns.
A first baseman when not pitching, the Chicago Christian High School graduate
also has perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 as he has not committed an error
in more than 200 fielding chances.

In league play, Wiers is sixth in the MIAA batting race with a .432 average
(19/44). He also leads the MIAA in total bases (33) and homeruns (3).

Calvin is currently 18-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with
an 11-4 conference mark. The Knights return to action Friday when they travel
to Siena Heights for a 4:00 pm non-conference game.
