Men's Tennis
Calvin recorded a fourth place finish of 31 points at the MIAA Championships
Saturday at Hope College. Senior Rob Stine (Hinsdale, IL) had the highest
singles finish by Calvin as he took third in the fifth flight, defeating Mark
O'Bryan of Alma 6-4, 6-3 in the third place match.
In second flight doubles, the Calvin tandem of senior Scott Jongekrijg (Grand
Rapids Christian) and sophomore Pat Napurski (Maple Grove, MN) took third,
winning the third place match over Alma's tandem 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.
In addition, senior Ben Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) earned a spot on the
All-MIAA second team. Knoester competed in the first flight of singles
competition Friday and Saturday and also joined freshman Mark Brieve (Holland
Christian) in flight one doubles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin took fourth at the MIAA Championships with 63.5 points at Kalamazoo
College, finishing a half-point behind third place Albion.
Senior Kait Disselkoen (Nairobi, Kenya) earned a spot on the All-MIAA first team
for the second straight year as she took third at flight one singles, defeating
Annie Knish of St. Mary's 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the third place match.
Sophomore Sally Skodinski (South Bend, IN) was named to the All-MIAA second team
after taking fifth place at flight two singles. Sophomore Jessica Bosma
(Lansing Waverly) earned conference runner-up honors at flight three singles,
falling to Jeannie Knish of St. Mary's 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match.
Senior Anne Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) took third for Calvin at flight four
singles, defeatying Lynsey Kluever of Albion 6-2, 6-3 in the third place match.
Sophomore Allison VerMeer (Pella, IA) was fifth at flight five singles while
junior Trisha Plaisier (Kalamazoo Christian) was third at flight six singles,
defeating Maya Zayat of Albion 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the third place match.
In doubles, Disselkoen and Skodinski took fourth at flight one doubles as did
the flight three Calvin doubles team of VerMeer and freshman Melissa DeWall
(Holland Christian). At flight two doubles, Calvin's duo of Bosma and
Koldenhoven finished as conference runner-ups, falling to Hope's tandem 6-2, 6-3
in the championship finals.
BASEBALL
Calvin closed out the weekend with a non-conference doubleheader split with
Wolverine-Hoosier foe Spring Arbor Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 4-3
before falling in the nightcap 6-0. The Knights are now 20-14 overall heading
into a huge three-game series at league-leading and rival Hope Tuesday and
Wednesday. Hope maintained firm hold of first place in the league standings
with a three-game sweep of Alma this weekend to improve to 10-2 in the MIAA.
Calvin is 11-4 in league action and will close out its conference slate with
Hope Tuesday and Wednesday. Hope will close out its league schedule next Friday
and Saturday with a three-game series at Adrian.
In its 4-3 victory over Spring Arbor Saturday, Calvin rallied from a 3-1 deficit
with three runs in the bottom of the seventh with senior Dirk Eppinga (Walnut
Creek, CA) ripping a one-out two-run RBI single to left to score senior Ross
Hunderman (Holland Christian) and junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) with the
winning runs. Calvin picked up only six hits in the victory but used two hits,
two walks and a Spring Arbor error in the seventh-inning rally.
Junior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) picked up the win in relief to run his record to 5-2
on the year. Senior Adam Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) went the first six innings
for the Knights, scattering six hits while striking out two and walking one.
In game two, Spring Arbor (28-15) scored four runs in the fourth and two in the
fifth while holding the Knights to one hit and no runs. Junior Andy Miedema
(Unity Christian) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 0-2 on the year.
On Friday, Calvin claimed a 2-1 victory at Siena Heights (12-33) with junior
Mike Ott (Grand Rapids Union) picking up the win to improve to 5-2 on the year.
Calvin broke a 1-1 with an RBI single by senior Zac Jackson (Kinsman, OH) in the
fourth that scored senior Jason TeBos (Calvin Christian) from third base.
Schmitz threw the final two innings in relief for the Knights to pick up his
fourth save of the year.
Tuesday's game at Hope will begin at 4:00 pm. The two teams will then face each
other in a Wednesday doubleheader slated to start at 2:00 pm.
