    BASEBALL

Calvin saw its six-game win streak come to an end as the Knights were upset by Kalamazoo 8-5 in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Kalamazoo's Woodworth Field. Ranked sixth in the latest Mideast Regional poll, Calvin committed five errors that led to four Hornet runs in the loss. Calvin (17-9 overall, 10-2 MIAA) then came back to top Kalamazoo 5-1 in game two to end up taking two games in the three-game series that originally began on Friday, April 20.

Tuesday's opener actually began on Monday but was halted in the bottom of the third with the Knights trailing 2-0. Senior Aaron Wiers (Chicago, IL) started the game on Monday but was replaced on Tuesday by junior Mike Ott (Union). Calvin was able to tie the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as junior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christian) blooped a two-out double to right that scored two.

Calvin continued to dig itself a hole however as the Hornets scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth, using a pair of stolen bases and a pair of Calvin errors to take a 4-2 lead. Junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth on a groundout and freshman Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) then provided a game-tying RBI single in the fifth.

The top of the sixth would prove to be disastrous for the Knights as Kalamazoo scored four times with senior Jim Hurd providing the big hit on a two-run homer to right that clanged off the centerfield scoreboard.

Trailing 8-4, Calvin battled back with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by senior Dirk Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA). The Knights then loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Kalamazoo relief pitcher Rick Sharp was able to get out of the jam with a game-ending strikeout.

Ott (4-2) took the pitching defeat for the Knights, snapping his four-game win streak while Sharp (2-1) picked up the win in relief.

Calvin then came back in the nightcap behind a sterling pitching effort from senior righthander Ryan Wolthuis (South Christian) who tossed a four-hitter while striking out four batters and walking none. The victory bumped his pitching record to 4-2 on the year.

Calvin jumped on Kalamazoo (6-16 overall, 2-7 MIAA) early with three unearned runs in the top of the first with senior Jason TeBos (Calvin Christian) ripping an RBI single to spark the inning. Kalamazoo scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first but would not score again as just five Kalamazoo hitters would reach base the rest of the way. The Knights picked up a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with Wiers leading off the with a double off the rightfield wall and then scoring on another RBI single by TeBos. TeBos then stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Griffith.

Wiers finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored while TeBos was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's and stolen bases.

Calvin returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Saginaw Valley State for a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. The Knights will then open up a critical three-game weekend set against conference foe Alma on Friday. Friday's game will begin at 4:00 pm with the series scheduled to wrap with a Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
