SOFTBALL
SAGINAW - Calvin snapped an eight-game losing skid with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Division II Saginaw Valley State Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) tossed the first shutout victory of her Calvin career as she threw a six-hit complete-game shutout win to up her record to 2-6 on the year.
The host Cardinals (11-21) outhit Calvin 6-3 in the contest but the Knights (12-20) scored the only two runs of the game in the top of the sixth innning. Senior Holly DeYoung (Kalamazoo Christian) provided the key blow in the inning, ripping a two-run RBI double down the right field line to score freshmen Annelise Pettinga (South Christian) and Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN). Pettinga led off the inning with a single and moved to third base when Balkema reached base on an error.
Saginaw Valley State placed runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Osgerby was able to end the threat on a game-ending grounddout to shortstop. DeYoung picked up two of Calvin's three hits in the victory.
In the opener, Calvin suffered a tough 1-0 defeat as the Cardinals scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the thrid. Calvin managed just three hits in the loss and had its best scoring chance in the sixth when junior Susannah Knust (Grandville) doubled to centerfield and subsequently moved to third base on a groundout. Calvin was unable to capitalize on the opportunity however as another groundout closed out the half-inning.
Junior Jennifer Bowen (Troy) took the hard-luck loss to fall to 2-8 on the year. Bowen struck out two batters without a walk in six innings of work with Knust collecting two of Calvin's three hits.
Calvin returns to action Friday when it travels to Olivet for a 3:30 pm doubleheader which will serve as the conference finale for the Knights.
BASEBALL
Calvin suffered a 10-9 loss at Division II Saginaw Valley State Wednesday afternoon to fall to 17-10 on the year. Calvin took a 9-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning but the Cardinals (26-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and added a run in the bottom of the seventh and two in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win.
Senior Adam Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) took the pitching defeat in eight innings of work as he allowed 10 hits while striking out six batters and also walking six.
Trailing 4-0, Calvin took its first lead with six runs in the top of the third as Saginaw Valley State walked in four straight runs and then brought in another by hitting a Calvin batter with the bases full. The Knights then scored their sixth run of the inning on a Saginaw Valley State error. In the fourth, freshman Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) drove in a run with an RBI double and sophomore Mark Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) drove in another run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Calvin scored its ninth run of the game in the top of the sixth as junior Mike Noorman (Covenant Christian) drove in Heuker from second base with an RBI single.
The Cardinals came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, using a hit, an error and two walks to close the gap to 9-7. Saginaw Valley State then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to creep to within a run and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the eighth, using a pair of extra-base hits and one Calvin error to go ahead and eventually win the game.
Saginaw Valley State outhit Calvin 10-8 with the Knights also committing four errors. Senior Jason TeBos (Calvin Christian) continued his hot hitting for the Knights as he went 2-for-5 with an double and a run scored while junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) also went 2-for-5 while scoring a pair of runs.
Calvin will now prepare for a critical three-game conference series with Alma. The Knights will open the series on Friday with a single game scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. The two clubs will then close out the set with a Saturday doubleheader slated to start at 1:00 pm.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin reached the double-digit mark in dual match victories for the fourth consecutive year with a 9-0 non-conference win over Aquinas Wednesday afternoon to close out the dual season 10-6 overall.
Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Championships May 4 and 5 at Kalamazoo College.
