MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

DECATUR, IL - The Calvin women's track and field team used several outstanding individual performances Saturday to capture the Millikin Classic with a first place total of 253 points. The meet was held at Millikin University, site of the 2001 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Sophomore Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) had a sensational afternoon for the Knights, posting three NCAA III provisional qualifying performances, taking first place in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles and second in the high jump. VanderLaan took first in the 100 hurdles with a season-best time of 15.12 and then clocked in with a first place time of 1:04.70 in the 400 meter hurdles. In the high jump, she came up with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best performance of 5-4 ½. Freshman teammate Stephanie Holwerda (Unity Christian) matched VanderLaan's effort with a provisional qualifying and career-best 5-4 ½ effort of her own. Holwerda took first place in the event as she cleared the bar at 5-4 ½ on an earlier attempt.

Junior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) also came up big for the Knights as she captured the pole vault with a school-record and NCAA III automatic qualifying performance of 12-0 which ranks as the top performance in Division III women's track and field this spring. Veltkamp also ran a leg on Calvin's first place 4 x 100 meter relay team (48.27) while taking third in the triple jump (34-7). Older sister Sara Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) took first place in the 800 meters (2:23.08) and ran a leg on Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team that took first place with an NCAA III automatic qualifying performance of 3:48.61).

In the weights, freshman Katie Corner (Catholic Central) was a double-winner, winning the shot put (39-2 ¼) and discus (133-9), missing the school record in the discus by just three inches. Other winners for the Calvin women included senior Megan Pierce in the 400 meters (56.18, NCAA III automatic qualifying performance); junior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) in the long jump (18-6 ½, NCAA III automatic qualifying performance); freshman Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) in the 3,000 meters (11:18.51); and senior Andrea Rip (Bothell, WA) in the javelin (131-11, NCAA III provisional qualifying performance).

On the men's side, Calvin also had a strong day as the Knights took third with 133 points. Senior Phil Sikkenga (Wheaton, IL) highlighted the afternoon for Calvin as he captured the 110 high hurdles with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 14.46 while also taking second in the 400 meters (49.72). In the 5,000 meters, Calvin came up with a 1-2-4-5 finish led by junior Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) who took first place in 15:27.21 followed by junior Justin Momany-Pfruender (Midland) in second (15:28.32); freshman Dave Haagsma (South Christian) in fourth (15:45.72) and sophomore Brian Paff (National City, CA) in fifth (16:00.70).

Calvin also received a win in the 10,000 meters as freshman Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) won the race in 33:39.09). Other notable efforts included sophomore Cameron Baron (Lake Stevens, WA) and senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) placing second and third respectively in the high jump with jumps of 6-7. Calvin's middle-distance runners were also strong with junior Peter Armstrong (Lacey, WA) taking second (4:07.29) and senior Jerry Cullum (Muskegon) taking third (1:58.07). Freshman Casey Koopmans (Kenowa Hills) added a third place time of 10:00.86 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. In addition, Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team took first place with a time of 3:18.51.

Both teams will return to action next Friday and Saturday when they compete at the Hillsdale Relays.

    SOFTBALL

Calvin saw its losing streak extended to seven games as the Knights were swept by rival Hope 5-3 and 7-4 Saturday afternoon in a conference doubleheader in Holland.

In the opener, Hope took a 3-0 lead on a three-run first inning homer by senior Carrie Scott. Hope then added two runs in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead before the Knights (11-19 overall, 2-10 MIAA) rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth with junior Susannah Knust (Grandville) and senior Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) collecting RBI singles in the inning.

Calvin would not score again however as the Flying Dutch held on for the win. Junior Jen Bowen (Troy) took the first game pitching loss to fall to 2-7 on the year. Bowen allowed seven hits while striking out four and walking five. Calvin picked up seven hits in defeat with freshman Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) and sophomore Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) both going 2-for-4 at the plate.

In game two, Hope (17-7 overall, 11-1 MIAA) again took an early lead and held off another late Calvin rally to hold on for the win. The Flying Dutch scored a pair of runs in the first and added a run in the top of the fourth to go up 3-0. Calvin scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the inning, using a hit and a Hope error to score. Hope added three more runs in the fifth however, using three hits and a pair of Calvin errors to build a 6-1 lead.

Trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Calvin then rallied for three runs as Knust doubled in a run with a trailing runner then scoring on a Hope throwing error. Calvin then used a second Hope error to score its third run of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Calvin threat was ended however on a game-ending strikeout.

Balkema was again 2-for-4 in defeat for the Knights while Volkers also went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 2-6 on the year. Osgerby struck out two batters and walked seven with Scott drawing three of Osgerby's free passes.
