    CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

    ATLANTA, GA - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams began their trek back north with a pair of first place performances at the Emory Spring Break Invitational Saturday. In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in a field of 16 teams with a score of 158 points while the Calvin women took first place in a field of 192 points.

    The Calvin women took first place in seven events as the Knights finished more than 50 points ahead of second-place Baldwin-Wallace. In the long jump, senior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) took first place with a leapof 18-5 with junior Mae Baber (Brandon, WI) taking third with a leap of 16-6 ½. Calvin then went 1-2 in the pole vault with junior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) taking first with a strong provisional qualifying mark of 11-5 while sophomore Anna Vandrie (Grand Rapids Christian) was second (9-11 ¼). Senior Andrea Rip (Bothell, WA) added to Calvin's strong field event showing as she took first in the javelin with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best throw of 137-2. In the triple jump, Mae Baber took first place (35-2) while sister Rebecca Baber (Brandon, WI) took third (33-3) and sophomore Lydia Boonstra (Escondido, CA) fourth (32-8 ¼).

    Sophomore Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) took first place in the 100 meter hurdles (15.36) and took second in the high jump (5-1 ¾). Senior Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN) took first in the 400 meters (55.94) while junior Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids Christian) was third (1:00.06). Freshman sprinter Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) also had a strong day, taking second in the 200 meters (26.28) and fourth in the 100 meters (13.04). Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team also took first place with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:53.13. Calvin also received strong efforts from juniors Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) and Laura Medema (Grand Rapids Christian) in the 5,000 meters as Carrier was third (18:26.97) and Medema fourth (18:48.47).

    In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in five events including 1-2 performances in the 10,000 meter run and the high jump. In the 10,000 meters, senior Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) captured first place with a time of 31:57.10 followed by senior Paul Petersen (Crawfordsville, IN) in second place with a time of 32:02.4. Freshman Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) was also fifth in the event (32:40.0). In the high jump, Calvin sophomore Cameron Baron (Lake Stevens, WA) took first place with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 6-8. Senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) also posted a provisional qualifying mark of 6-8 and took second with more attempts.

    In the 400 meters, Calvin senior Phil Sikkenga (Wheaton, IL) just missed an NCAA III provisional qualifying time as he took first place with a time of 48.07. Sikkenga was part of a 1-3-6 Calvin finish as junior Keith VanGoor (Midland Park, NJ) was third (49.05) and sophomore Steve Abbring (Highland, IN) sixth (49.71). In the 400 meter hurdles, Calvin senior Eric Hansen (Big Rapids) took first place with a career-best time of 54.68. Sikkenga, VanGoor, Abbring and Hansen then combined to take first place in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:18.61.

    Other notable performances for the Calvin men included a second place finish by senior Mark DeWeerd (Unity Christian) in the pole vault with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15-6 ¼'; a 2-3-4-5 finish by Calvin in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with junior Justin Momany-Pfruender (Midland) leading the Calvin charge with a second place time of 9:48.58 and a third place time of 4:02.11 by senior Kevin VerBeek (Lansing, IL) in the 1,500 meters.

    Both Calvin track teams return to action next Saturday when they compete at the Aquinas Invitational at Houseman Field.
