    BASEBALL

    WINTER HAVEN, FL - Calvin split a doubleheader with Amherst (MA) Thursday afternoon to move to 2-3 on the year. In the opener, Calvin used a strong pitching performance from senior Adam Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) to gain a 4-2 victory. The Knights then dropped a 7-1 decision in the nightcap as Amherst rapped out 12 hits while holding Calvin to just five hits.

    In the opening game win, Marcionetti threw shutout ball until the seventh when he was touched up for two runs. Senior Matt Schmitz (Lowell) then came on in relief to close the door and pick up the save. Calvin used four consecutive hits to score three times in the third with senior Aaron Wiers (Chicago, IL) belting a two-run RBI triple and senior Dirk Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) adding an RBI single.

    In game two, Amherst (4-2) scored three times in the second, once in the third, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to pull away for the victory. Freshman Brent Wheat (Traverse City Central) took the loss in his first collegiate start while sophomore Mark Koldenhoven (Burr Ridge, IL) threw the final three innings of relief. Junior James Cottier (Denver, CO) picked up the only extra-base hit for Calvin in defeat with a double.

    The Knights return to action Friday when they face Augsburg (MN) in a doubleheader.

    SOFTBALL

    FORT MYERS, FL - Calvin got back above the .500 mark with victories over Marycrest and Buffalo State Thursday afternoon to improve to 3-2 overall. Calvin the day with a 10-2 win over Marycrest (IA) as the Knights pounded out 11 hits and used a seven-run uprising in the third inning to take control of the game. Freshman Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) picked up her third pitching victory without a loss as she allowed just two hits in the five-inning mercy-rule win. Cole struck out six batters and did not walk anyone. Offensively, Calvin was led by junior Susannah Knust (Grandville) and sophomores Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) and Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) as all three players collected two hits apiece.

    Calvin then picked up a 5-3 win over Buffalo State with sophomore Erin Osgerby (Caledonia) hurling a complete-game victory to pick up her first win in a Calvin uniform. Freshman Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to stake Calvin to a 4-0 lead. The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Lyndsay Heinkel (Milwaukee, WI) in the sixth. Buffalo State then scored three times in the top of the seventh before Osgerby was able to end the threat with a strikeout and a game-ending pop-up to catcher Annelise Pettinga (South Christian).

    Calvin picked up six hits in the win over Buffalo State with Knust and Dyksterhouse collecting two hits apiece.

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

    Hilton Head, SC - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 9-0 win over Macalester (MN) Thursday afternoon to snap a two-match losing skid and improve to 3-2 overall. The Knights will close out their spring trip Friday morning with a match against MacMurray (IL) College.
