BASEBALL
FORT MYERS, FL - Calvin concluded its spring trip with a 4-5 record as the
Knighs split a doubleheader with Augsburg (MN) Friday and then split games
Saturday, defeating Messiah (PA) and falling to nationally-ranked Southern
Maine.
Calvin captured the opener of Friday's twinbill with Augsburg 3-1 behind a
complete-game pitching performance from senior Ryan Wolthuis (South Christian).
Wolthuis scattered five hits and did not allow a run until the seventh inning.
Calvin used a three-run homer from senior Aaron Wiers (Chicago, IL) in the top
of the third to break a scoreless tie and then tacked on another run in the
fourth. The Knights finished the game with eight hits with senior Zac Jackson
(Kinsman, OH) also smacking a double for Calvin.
In the nightcap, Augsburg pounded out 16 hits while holding the Knights to just
three as Augsburg rolled to a 12-0 win. Augsburg scored six runs in the first
three innings to take command early. Sophomore Seth McLaughlin (South
Christian) took the loss for Calvin with freshman Bryan Wheat (Traverse City)
also pitching three innings of relief for the Knights.
On Saturday, Wiers turned in a dominating pitching performance in leading
Calvin to a 3-1 victory over Messiah. Wiers (1-1) went the distance while
allowing just three Messiah hits. Calvin again used the longball to its
advantage as junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) ripped a two-run homer in the
bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie. Calvin then added a run in the
sixth with Messiah scoring its lone run in the top of the seventh.
The Knights then suffered a 5-4 loss to fifth-ranked Southern Maine as the
Bears overcame a 4-2 deficit with a run in the top of the sixth and two in the
top of the seventh. Senior Mike Ott (Union) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the
year. The Bears finished with nine hits while Calvin came up with five.
Calvin is scheduled to travel to Grand Valley State Tuesday for a
non-conference game and then return home to host Northwood Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights will open their MIAA season Friday with the first game of a
three-game homestand with Olivet.
