MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out the
dual meet season with a pair of weekend victories. On Friday, the
Calvin men defeated Hillsdale 103-28 at the Bergsma Natatorium and then
defeated Lake Forest on the road Saturday 152-80. With the pair of
wins, the Calvin men finish 8-2 on the dual meet season.
On the women's side, Calvin defeated Hillsdale 129-79 Friday night at
the Bergsma Natatorium and then topped Lake Forest 137-106 on the road
Saturday afternoon. The Calvin women finish the dual meet season 8-3
overall.
Against Hillsdale, the Calvin women were paced by senior Liesje Konyndyk
(Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Katie Nagelkirk (Holland
Christian) as both individuals were double-winners. Konyndyk won the
200 IM (2:20.45) and 500 freestyle (5:23.33). Her time in the 500 free
was a season-best by five seconds. Nagelkirk also had a pair of fast
swims, winning the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.55 and the
100 freestyle with a season-best and NCAA III B' Cut qualifying time of
53.62. Nagelkirk also teamed up with sophomore Deb Knott (Holland
Christian), sophomore Anne Kuiper (Houghton) and junior Kate Conrad
(Calvin Christian) in the 200 medley relay for a first place time of
1:54.45.
Other winners for the Calvin women Friday included sophomore Mara McGuin
(Oak Park, IL) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:19.44); freshman Sara TerHaar
(Bradenton, FL) on the one-meter diving board (203.90) and Kuiper in the
100 btutterfly (1:01.98).
In the men's competition Friday, Calvin took first place in seven
events. Individual winners for Calvin included sophomore A.J. Penninga
(Grand Rapids Christian) in the 200 freestyle (1:46.32); sophomore Brad
White (Dayton, OH) in the 200 IM (2:01.83); sophomore Jake VanderPlas
(Palo Alto, CA) in the 100 butterfly (55.26); junior Chris Veltman
(Duarte, CA) in the 100 freestyle (49.39) and sophomore Brian Koster
(Grand Rapids Christian) on the one-meter diving board (231.20).
Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Veltkamn, Penninga, sophomore Ryan
Johnson (Grand Haven) and sophomore Jeff Rozema (Holland Christian) also
took first place with a time of 1:43.84.
Complete results of Saturday's competition against Lake Forest were not
available Saturday night.
Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the MIAA Championships to be
hosted February 15-17 by Hope College.
