    MEN'S BASKETBALL

With just a few games left in his collegiate career, Calvin senior
center Josh Tubergen has apparently saved his best for last as the
Holland Christian High School graduate scored a career-high 23 points
along with 10 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 118-81 homecoming
victory in front of more than 3,800 fans at the Calvin Fieldhouse
Saturday afternoon. Since moving into the starting lineup in place in
injured center Brian Krosschell (Grand Rapids Christian), Tubergen has
racked up five consecutive double-figure scoring performances including
a pair of double-doubles. Tubergen also collected a career-high six
assists in Saturday's win along with two blocks and two steals. Five of
Tubergen's eight field goals were dunks Saturday as he finished 8-of-10
from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

Saturday's win marked its 12th consecutive homecoming win and also
marked a season-high in points scored by the Knights as a team.

Calvin improved to 16-4 overall with the non-conference win and also
moved back into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as
Adrian upset Albion 63-58 and Olivet upset Hope 85-63. Calvin is alone
at the top at 6-3 while Hope drops to 6-3 and Albion to 5-3 in the MIAA.
In the other MIAA men's game Saturday, Kalamazoo topped Alma 83-71.
Calvin will host Adrian next Wednesday night and then journey to Albion
    next Saturday.

Tubergen was one of six Calvin players to reach double-figures in
scoring. Freshman Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) came up with 19 points,
connecting on all six of his field goal and free throw attempts while
sophomores Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) and Bryan Foltice
(Tri-unity Christian) added 15 points apiece. In addition, senior Derek
Kleinheksel (Hamilton) and freshman Rob Holleman (Chandler, MN) came off
the bench to score 12 points apiece. Freshman Phil Visser (Unity
Christian) also had eight points and two assists off the bench.

Calvin rolled out to a 39-14 first half lead and led at halftime 53-31.
Orchard Lake St. Mary's (11-18) would creep to within 16 points at 71-55
with 12:32 left but would get no closer as the Knights outscored the
Eagles 47-26 the rest of the way.

    Calvin finished with a season-high 13 three-point field goals,
connecting on 13-of-25 from beyond the arc for a sizzling 52 percent
three-point clip. Calvin also shot a season-high 63.8 percent overall
(44-of-69) and outrebounded the Eagles 36-21.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's was led in scoring by Michael Davis who scored
27 points while Mike Matthews had 18 points and Lamon Mathison had 16.

Wednesday's game with Adrian will start at 7:30 pm at the Calvin
    Fieldhouse.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Coming off of a four-game losing streak and it dire need of a win, the
Knights looked to a Homecoming game with St. Mary's to get back on the
winning track. Calvin was granted its wish as it dominated the Belles
80-45 in front of a Homecoming crowd.

The victory was Calvin's eighth consecutive homecoming win in women's
basketball and its second straight homecoming win over St. Mary's. More
importantly, Calvin moved into a three-way tie for third place in the
MIAA standings at 5-5 as Kalamazoo and Olivet both dropped games
    Saturday.

Calvin (10-10 overall, 5-5 MIAA) used hot shooting in the first half and
strong defense to hold the Belles (7-13 overall, 1-9 MIAA) to 13 first
half points as the Knights led 47-13 at the break. The Knights limited
St. Mary's to 15 percent field goal shooting and forced 15 St. Mary's
turnovers in the first half while scorching the nets on offense at a 64
    percent clip.

The second half also belonged to the Knights as their shooting cooled
off, but their defense did not. Calvin shot 46 percent from the floor in
the second half while the Belles shot 33 percent.

Calvin was led by sophomore Jennifer Plakmeyer (Calvin Christian) as she
tallied 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Sophomore Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) tallied 11 points and 4
steals. Junior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) pitched in a career-high
12 rebounds along with 4 points.
