MEN'S BASKETBALL
After coming close to gaining its first league win on several prior
occasions, it figured to be only a matter of time before a youthful
Kalamazoo men's basketball team broke into the MIAA win column.
Unfortunately for Calvin, that time came Wednesday night as Kalamazoo
upset the Knights 79-65 at the Anderson Athletic Center to gain its
first conference victory of the year and snap a seven-game losing streak
in the process. The win was Kalamazoo's first over Calvin since 1998.
The Kalamazoo victory also tightened the MIAA race as Hope moved back
into a first place tie at 6-2 with Calvin as the Flying Dutchmen picked
up a 71-62 win at Adrian Wednesday night while Albion remained just a
half-game back of Calvin and Hope at 5-2 with a 69-60 win at Olivet.
Averaging better than 101 points a game over its last three games,
Calvin was held to a season-low in points Wednesday night as Calvin shot
just 35.7 percent overall (20-of-56) including just 30.8 percent in the
first half when Kalamazoo rolled out to a 42-27 halftime lead.
Calvin took a 9-2 lead in the opening moments of the first half but the
Hornets (6-14 overall) responded with a 16-2 run to take a 25-13 lead
with 9:23 left in the half. Kalamazoo would finish the first half with
a 50 percent field goal clip including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from
three-point range.
Calvin roared out of the gates in the second half with an 18-6 run to
close to within 48-45 with 10:39 to play. Freshman Rob Holleman
(Chandler, MN) accounted for eight of Calvin's points in the spurt,
nailing a pair of three-point shots along with a pair of free throws.
Kalamazoo answered with a 9-2 run to stretch its lead to 57-47 with 7:19
to go. Calvin would climb back to within four at 66-62 on a pair of
free throws by senior Josh Tubergen (Holland Christian) with 2:07 to go
but the Knights would get no closer as the Hornets converted 11 free
throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.
Calvin (15-4 overall) was led in scoring by Tubergen who came up with a
career-high 22 points along with nine rebounds while sophomore Jeremy
Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Holleman added nine points while sophomore Bryan Foltice (Tri-unity
Christian) chipped in with eight.
Kalamazoo was led in scoring by sophomore Dirk Rhinehart who pumped in
19 points while sophomore Scott Montmorency had 13 and junior Nate
Troyer 12.
Kalamazoo shot 45.6 percent overall (26-of-57) and was 8-of-18 (44.4
percent) from three-point range. The Hornets also converted 19-of-21
(90.5 percent) free throw attempts. Calvin was just 2-of-16 (12.5
percent) from three-point range and was 23-of-31 (74.2 percent) from the
free throw line.
Calvin is back in action Saturday when it hosts Orchard Lake St. Mary's
at 3:00 pm in a non-conference game that will be part of a homecoming
afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin saw a chance to move into a tie for third place in the MIAA
standings slip away in the final two minutes as Kalamazoo came up with a
58-54 victory over the Knights at the Calvin Fieldhouse Wednesday
evening.
Leading 54-50 with 5:45 to go, Calvin would not score again as the
Hornets (13-6 overall, 5-4 MIAA) score the final eight points of the
game to secure the win.
The defeat marked the fourth consecutive loss for Calvin as it dropped
into fifth place in the league standings while Kalamazoo moved into a
tie for third place with Olivet with the win.
Calvin (9-10 overall, 4-5 MIAA) trailed 27-25 at halftime and then fell
behind 33-26 in the opening three minutes of the second half.
Sophomores Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) and Jennifer Plakmeyer
(Calvin Christian) then got hot from the outside as Mejuer sandwhiched a
pair of triples around a three-ball from Plakmeyer that allowed the
Knights to tie the game at 35-35 with 15 minutes remaining.
The lead would then change hands 10 times over the next eight minutes
with Calvin building a 50-48 lead with 7:13 left on a free throw by
sophomore Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) and then taking a
54-50 lead on a layup by junior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) and a
pair of free throws from freshman Kim Wolthuis (South Christian).
Kalamazoo senior MaryJane Valade then stepped up in a big way for the
Hornets as she converted three straight buckets inside including the
go-ahead hoop with just over a minute left that put Kalamazoo up 56-54.
Calvin junior Kendra Toonstra (Calvin Christian) nearly tied the game
with 26 seconds left but her baseline jumper bounced in-and-out. A pair
of free throws by Kalamazoo freshman Alissa Johnston then put the
Hornets up 58-54 with Calvin unable to counter in the final seconds.
Plakmeyer led Calvin with a career-high 27 points as she was 9-of-13
from the floor including 5-of-7 from three-point range. She also added
four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Emily Beard
(Southfield Christian) added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Apart from Plakmeyer's shooting performance, Calvin was just 8-of-40
from the floor as the Knights shot just 32.1 percent (17-of-53) overall.
Kalamazoo shot 41.8 percent overall (23-of-55) and was 9-of-12 (.750) at
the free throw line. Calvin was 13-of-22 (.591) at the free throw line
with Kalamazoo outrebounding Calvin 37-35. Kalamazoo turned the ball
over 22 times with Calvin turning it over 21 times.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts St. Mary's of Indiana
in front of a homecoming crowd at 12:45 pm.
