    MEN'S BASKETBALL

Since a 77-68 loss to Albion on January 17, Calvin's offense has found a
different gear. On Saturday, Calvin ratcheted its offensive attack up a
few more levels as the Knights handed visiting Olivet a 115-88 defeat at
    the Calvin Fieldhouse.

The victory marked the third consecutive game that Calvin has scored 90
points or more. It was also Calvin's highest offensive output of the
season and the most points scored since a 115-79 victory over McMurry
(TX) in the 2000 NCAA III Sectional Finals. It also allowed the Knights
to improve to 15-3 overall and remain in sole possession of first place
in the MIAA standings at 6-1, one game ahead of second place Hope which
improved to 5-2 in the MIAA with a 76-61 victory over Kalamazoo
Saturday. The Calvin victory also snapped Olivet's three-game win
    streak.

Calvin used a 15-4 run midway through the first half to take a 32-19
lead. The Knights would lead by as many as 16 points in the first half,
en route to taking a 50-37 halftime lead. Sophomore Bryan Foltice
(Tri-unity Christian) scored 16 of his career high 29 points in the
first half while senior Josh Tubergen also came up with 10 points and
nine rebounds in the first half.

Olivet (9-8 overall, 4-3 MIAA) closed the deficit to eight points on two
occasions early in the second half but a 10-4 run in a three-and-a-half
minute span allowed the Knights to build a double-digit lead that they
would hold the rest of the way.

In addition to the 29 points from Foltice, Calvin received 25 points
from sophomore Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) including 17 in the
second half. Veenstra connected on 12-of-17 field goal attempts in the
game including 8-of-9 in the second half. Tubergen also came up with
his first career double-double performance as he finished with 14 points
and a career-high 10 rebounds while blocking three shots and collecting
three steals and two assists. Freshman Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) also
came up with 13 points and seven boards for the Knights. Junior Jon
Potvin (Gladstone) added nine points including a pair of triples off the
bench while freshman Phil Visser (Unity Christian) finished with seven
points and two assists in his varsity debut.

Olivet was led in scoring by senior Ajamian Gardner who scored 19 points
and handed out four assists while senior Bruce Lawrence had 16 points
and 12 rebounds. Seniors Derric Paige and Brian Johnson added 13 and 11
    points respectively for the Comets.

Calvin finished with a 56.7 percent (34-of-60) field goal clip including
64.7 percent in the second half. Olivet shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59)
overall. Calvin won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Olivet
40-30. Calvin also notched season-highs in free throw attempts (49) and
free throws made (40) in the victory for an 81.6 percent free throw
clip. Olivet was 30-of-40 (.750) at the free throw line.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a
7:30 pm contest at the Anderson Athletic Center.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Olivet hadn't beaten Calvin in its last 21 attempts, but Saturday at the
Upton Center would be a different story as the Comets prevailed over the
Knights 41-35. Calvin's 35 points marked its lowest offensive output of
the season as the Knights dropped their third consecutive league game.

Olivet (13-5 overall, 5-3 MIAA) started off strong by scoring the first
ten points of the game. Calvin narrowed the lead to two points with 4:37
left in the first half on a layup by junior Kendra Toonstra (Calvin
Christian). The Knights went into the locker room down 23-17.

The opening moments of the second half belonged to the Comets as they
boosted their lead to 13 points off a Lindsey Brunworth 3-pointer.
Calvin continued to hang around narrowing the Olivet lead down to one
point at 36-35 on a layup by Jennifer Plakmeyer (Calvin Christian) with
1:58 left in the game. Olivet then scored five points and held Calvin
without a field goal to close out the game.

Olivet limited the Knights to 23 percent shooting for the game and held
the Knights to 20 percent from behind the arc. Toonstra had eight points
and nine rebounds while Plakmeyer had seven points for the maroon and
gold. The Comets were led by sophomore center Louisa Grill as she
tallied a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and three blocks.

The loss drops Calvin into a tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings
with Kalamazoo at 4-4 in league play.
The two teams will meet Wednesday night when Calvin hosts the Hornets at
    the Fieldhouse at 7:30 pm.
