January 27, 2001
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The longest dual meet win streak in MIAA women's
swimming and diving history is still alive as Hope held off Calvin
126-117 Saturday afternoon at the Bergsma Natatorium to stretch its MIAA
dual meet win streak to 49. The Hope victory allowed the Flying Dutch
to claim the MIAA dual meet title for the 9th consecutive year as Hope
finished 6-0 in the league dual meet standings while Calvin took second
at 5-1. The MIAA dual meet title is worth one-third of the final league
crown with the league championships worth the remaining two-thirds.
Calvin used a 1-2 finish in the 100 freestyle to take a 76-74 lead with
five events remaining. Calvin junior Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids
Christian) won the event with a time of 55.47 while junior teammate Kate
Conrad (Calvin Christian) was second in 56.28. The duo also helped
power a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 50 freestyle as Kloostra was first
(25.36); Conrad second (25.58) and freshman Amy Youngquist (Zeeland)
third (27.20).
Hope used a 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke to retake the lead 87-82
with senior Betsy VandenBerg taking first (2:14.26) and freshman Audrey
Arnold taking second (2:15.13). Hope then used a first place time of
5:19.94 by sophomore Erin VandenBerg in the 500 freestyle to go up
97-91.
A pivotal moment of the meet then took place in the three-meter diving
competition as Hope's Brooke Vivian edged Calvin freshman Sara TerHaar
(Bradenton, FL) by six-tenths of a point to win the event with a score
of 201.90. The first place performance helped the Flying Dutch gain
another five points on the Knights as they went up 109-98.
Hope would then go 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke with Betsy VandenBerg
winning in 2:22.74 to take a 124-102 lead and put the meet of out reach.
Calvin closed out with a 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay with its
team of Conrad, sophomores Jenny Los (Holland Christian) and Katie
Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) and senior Alison Kraai (Grand Rapids
Christian) winning with a time of 3:46.29.
"We're disappointed to lose but give Hope and coach Patnott all the
credit," said Calvin coach Dan Gelderloos. "Hope came up big in a
number of key events and that proved to be the difference. Our goal now
is to refocus for the MIAA Championships in three weeks. We know that
we can still win the league with a first place performance at the
conference meet."
On the men's side, Hope topped Calvin 152-85. Hope finished second in
the final MIAA dual standings at 4-1 while Calvin took third at 3-2.
Hope took first place in 10 of the 13 events Saturday with Brian Slaugh
posting a pair of victories with a first place time of 1:45.13 in the
200 freestyle and a first place time of 4:48.36 in the 500 freestyle.
Calvin sophomore A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) took first place
in the 200 IM (1:59.52) while sophomore Brian Koster (Grand Rapids
Christian) won the one-meter (2:29.55) and three-meter (223.80) diving
competitions.
