    JANUARY 20, 2001

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

In more ways than one, it was a game that Calvin had to have.

In an emotional afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse, the Knights pulled
back into a share of first place in the MIAA standings with a 95-85
victory over rival Hope in front of a sellout crowd of 4,500 fans.

The victory came on the heels of a stunning 77-68 loss to Albion
Wednesday night. It also came a day after Calvin had learned that
senior tri-captain Brian Krosschell was lost for the year after
undergoing surgery to repair torn knee cartilage suffered in the loss to
    Albion.

Saturday's victory helped salve the emotional wounds left from the loss
    of Krosschell.

It also allowed Calvin to improve to 14-3 overall and to 4-1 in the
MIAA, creating a tie for first place with Hope in the league standings
as the Flying Dutchmen fell to 11-6 overall and to 4-1 in the MIAA.

Albion could have created a three-way tie for first place but dropped a
game back of Calvin and Hope as the Britons were upset at home by Alma
    74-66 Saturday.

The Calvin victory snapped Hope's nine-game win streak and also allowed
the Knights to boost their 80-year series lead to 74-71 over the Flying
    Dutchmen.

Sophomore forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) came up with
the finest all-around performance of his collegiate career to key the
Calvin victory as he scored a career-high 34 points along with 10
rebounds to record his 10th career double-double. Veenstra was 9-of-16
from the floor and 15-of-17 from the free throw line while also coming
up with three assists, three steals and three blocked shots.

To say that Calvin's victory was the result of a "one-man show" would
hardly be accurate however as several Knights came up with yeoman
efforts to help produce the win.

Sophomore Bryan Foltice (Tri-unity Christian) came off the bench to
score 14 points on a gimpy knee while senior Josh Tubergen (Holland
Christian) had 12 points and nine rebounds and senior Nate Burgess
(South Christian) 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two
steals. Freshman Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) added eight points - all
coming in the second half while sophomore Dave Bartels (Kalamazoo
Christian) added seven points in his most significant action of the
season. Prins and Bartels both came up with splendid defensive efforts,
particularly in the second half when Calvin overcome a 10-point
    deficit.

Hope took a 45-41 halftime behind a red-hot shooting attack as the
Flying Dutchmen connected on 59.4 percent of their field goal attempts.
Calvin was able to keep pace behind a 50.0 percent field goal clip while
also nailing 11-of-14 attempts (.786) from the free throw line.

Calvin would take just its second lead of the game just over four
minutes into the second half as Foltice connected on a three-pointer to
put the Knights up 57-56. Hope would then rip off a 13-2 scoring run to
take a 69-59 lead with 12:20 to go. The Flying Dutchmen connected on
four triples in the run including three from senior Kyle VanderWall.

Calvin then stepped up its defensive effort while finding offensive
production from a pair of unlikely sources. Bartels connected on a
jumper at the 10:53 mark and added a triple with 9:24 to go to bring the
Knights within two at 71-69. Junior point guard Jon Potvin (Gladstone)
then swished a three-pointer from the left of the arc to put the Knights
    up 72-71 with 8:39 left.

The Bartels-Potvin connection helped fuel a 21-4 Calvin scoring run as
the Knights would never trail again. Hope continued to fight back but
Calvin connected on 9-of-12 attempts from the free throw line in the
final 1:10 of regulation to close out the win.

Calvin finished the game with an even 50.0 percent (31-of-62) field
goal clip. The Knights also enjoyed a healthy advantage at the free
throw line, hitting 28-of-37 (.757) from the line while Hope was 7-of-13
(.538) from the charity stripe. Hope also finished with a 50.0 percent
(33-of-66) shooting performance but cooled down to 41.2 percent shooting
    in the second half.

Calvin also outrebounded the Flying Dutchmen 43-29 including 26-16 in
    the second half.

Hope was led in scoring by VanderWall who pumped in 18 points off the
bench while sophomore Chad Carlson had 16 and seniors Chad Zagar and
Ryan Klingler 12 and 10 points respectively.

Calvin will close out the first half of its MIAA regular season
campaign next Wednesday when it travels to Alma for a 7:30 pm contest.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin's three-game win streak came to an end as the Knights suffered a
56-39 defeat to nationally-ranked Hope Saturday afternoon at the Dow
    Center in Holland.

Calvin (9-7 overall, 4-2 MIAA) came into Saturday's game with the
MIAA's top defensive scoring average but it was the Flying Dutch (14-2
overall, 6-0 MIAA) who clapped on the defensive clamps as Hope limited
the Knights to 32.6 percent field goal shooting (14-of-43) including
just 26.3 percent in the first half.

Ranked 13th in the latest D3hoops Top-25 poll, Hope shot 41.8 percent
overall including 50 percent in the second half while also holding a
    38-29 rebounding advantage.

Hope used a 14-5 spurt midway through the first half to vault itself to
a 25-16 halftime lead. Hope then took a 33-18 lead with an 8-2 run in
the opening four minutes of the second half. Calvin would battle back
to within seven points at 44-37 on a layup by junior Tara Bergsma
(Calvin Christian) with 5:56 to go.

Hope would outscore the Knights 12-2 the rest of the way however to
    secure the win.

Calvin was led in scoring by Bergsma who picked up eight points off the
bench while junior Kendra Toonstra (Calvin Christian) and sophomore
Jennifer Plakmeyer had six points apiece.

Hope was led in scoring by junior Amy Baltmanis who came up with 19
points while sophomore center Amanda Kerkstra had 12.

Calvin committed 24 turnovers in defeat and also struggled at the free
throw line, connecting on 8-of-16 (.500) attempts.

Despite the loss, Calvin remained alone in third place in the MIAA
standings as Kalamazoo fell to 3-3 with a 54-53 loss to Olivet.

Calvin will close out the first half of its MIAA regular season
campaign Wednesday night when it hosts second-place Alma at 7:30 pm.
