Veenstra Named MIAA Player of the Week
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin
sophomore Jeremy Veenstra has been named MIAA Player of the Week.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Veenstra led Calvin to victories over Cornerstone and Grace Bible last
week as the Knights improved to 7-1 on the year.
In an 82-77 come-from-behind victory over Cornerstone Tuesday night,
Veenstra came up with 22 points and six rebounds as he connected on
9-of-12 field goal attempts including 2-of-4 from three-point range. In
a 71-56 triumph over Grace Bible Friday evening, Veenstra tallied 16
points, seven rebounds and four steals.
On the week, Veenstra was 14-of-23 from the field; 2-of-5 from
three-point range; 8-of-13 at the free throw line and was credited with
six steals and three assists.
Veenstra is currently ranked in the top-10 of six MIAA statistical
categories. He leads the MIAA in scoring average at 16.9 points a game
and is third in rebounding with an average of 7.4 rebounds-a game. In
addition, he is second in steals-per-game (2.6); sixth in field goal
percentage (.556); fifth in blocked shots-per-game (1.0) and ninth in
three-point field goal percentage (.429).
Veenstra is the second Calvin player to earn MIAA Player of the Week
honors in men's basketball this year as sophomore teammate Bryan Foltice
was so honored two weeks ago.
Calvin is ranked fourth in the latest D3hoops Top-25 Men's Basketball
poll. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they travel to
Aquinas for a 3:00 pm contest.
