WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin dropped its third consecutive game as the Knights were handed an
83-49 defeat by a strong Cornerstone team Saturday afternoon at the
Calvin Fieldhouse.
Cornerstone (11-3) led 40-26 at halftime, using a 14-7 run to build a
double-digit lead. The Golden Eagles then held Calvin (3-4) without a
field goal for an eight-minute stretch early in the second half to put
the game away.
The victory was the third this week by Cornerstone over an MIAA
opponent as the Golden Eagles had registered double-digit wins over Alma
and Hope earlier in the week.
Calvin sophomore Jennifer Plakmeyer (Calvin Christian) led the Knights
with 16 points including a pair of three-point shots while sophomore
Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) added nine points off the bench. No
other Calvin player scored more than six points. Cornerstone was led by
senior Laura Yonkers who tallied 22 points including 18 in the first
half while sophomore Amy Popierlarz added 13 points and four assists.
Cornerstone shot 50 percent (31-of-62) overall while Calvin shot 30.6
percent overall (19-of-62) including just 23.7 percent in the second
half.
Calvin turned the ball over 22 times with Cornerstone committing 11
turnovers. Calvin did hold a rebounding advantage, outboarding
Cornerstone 42-38 with junior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) corralling
a game-high seven rebounds.
Calvin will now break until December 27 when it opens play at the
Clarke College Holiday Tournament in Dubuque, Iowa. Calvin will be one
of eight teams in the tournament field with the Knights scheduled to
play three games over the course of the tournament. Seedings and times
for the tournament are scheduled to be released next week.
