    SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2000

    MEN' S BASKETBALL

    GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin picked up its second consecutive homecourt
    victory as the Knights topped visiting Grace Bible 71-56 in front of
    nearly 2000 fans Friday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

    After trailing 10-6 early on, Calvin vaulted in front to take a 43-20
    halftime lead, outscoring the Tigers 17-6 over the final five minutes of
    the first half.

    Calvin (7-1) extended its lead to 29 points midway through the second
    half as the Knights moved out in front 63-34 with 10:20 left. A
    three-pointer by sophomore Dave Bartels (Kalamazoo Christian) gave
    Calvin a 69-42 lead with 7:03 remaining but a group of Calvin reserves
    then went scoreless over the next six-and-a-half minutes, allowing Grace
    Bible (5-8) to chip away at Calvin's lead and pull to within 69-54 with
    just over a minute to play.

    Bartels broke the Calvin scoring drought with a pair of free throws to
    put Calvi up 71-54 with 36 seconds left. Grace Bible sophomore Chris
    Fulford (Byron Center) followed by scoring on a tip-in with 16 seconds
    left to complete the scoring.

    Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo
    Christian) who tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two
    assists while freshmen Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) and Rob Holleman
    (Chandler, MN) added 11 points apiece. Freshman Justin Openeer
    (Kellogsville) led Grace Bible with 13 points while Fulford added 12.

    Calvin shot 41.9 percent from the field overall including 48.4 percent
    in the first half. Grace Bible shot 34.5 percent overall including just
    29.6 percent in the first half. Calvin outrebounded the Tigers 40-37
    and forced Grace Bible into 18 turnovers.

    Calvin will now break for first semester exams and return to action on
    December 16 when it travels to Aquinas for a 3:00 pm contest.
