    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, September 12, 2000

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    Calvin's losing streak was extended to four games as the Knights
    dropped a 2-1 sudden-death overtime decision at Albion in the MIAA
    opener for both teams.

    Calvin falls to 1-4 with the loss while Albion moved to 3-1. Sarah
    Pike's goal in the 92nd minute allowed the Britons to gain the win as
    Pike took a pass from Laurie Vance and curled in a shot from the left
    wing that snuck inside the far right goal-post for the game-winning
    "golden goal."

    Albion took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 35th minute but the Knights
    came back to tie the game at 1-1 on a goal by junior Tara Bergsma
    (Calvin Christian) in the 71st minute with freshman Dana Haan (Lynden,
    WA) assisting.

    Calvin outshot the Britons 30-29 while sophomore goaltender Leah
    VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) had 18 saves in goal for the Knights.

    Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it travels to rival Hope for
    a game scheduled to begin at noon.

    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin got back on the winning track with a 15-13, 15-1, 16-14 victory
    at Albion Tuesday evening at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium. The win allowed
    the Knights to improve to 6-2 overall and to 2-1 in the MIAA.

    Seniors Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) and Ann Wiersma (Vista, CA)
    came up with 12 kills apiece while sophomores Melissa Pell (Fremont) and
    Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) had nine and eight kills respectively.
    Pell also tallied 4 blocks while Wiersma had 10 digs. In addition,
    junior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) tossed out 40 assists.

    Calvin returns to action on Friday and Saturday when it competes at the
    John Carroll Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio.

    MEN'S GOLF

    Calvin finished tied for fourth in the first MIAA outing of the year.
    The outing was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club with Calvin
    tying Alma for fourth place with a team score of 405 strokes.

    Calvin's top individual was sophomore Tony Karsten (Holland Christian)
    who finished ninth individually with a round of 78 while junior Adam
    Derrickson (North Muskegon) was next for Calvin with a score of 80.
    Other Calvin finishers included juniors Bryan Hoekstra (Grand Rapids
    Christian) and Jason Rop (Western Michigan Christian) with rounds of 81;
    junior Jon Kalmink (Grosse Pointe) with a round of 85 and sophomore Mike
    Sherman (Grand Rapids Christian) with a score of 88.

    Calvin returns to action on Wednesday, September 20 when it competes at
    the second MIAA outing of the year. The outing will be hosted by Olivet
    at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
