CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, September 13, 2000

    MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin continued to use the hot scoring foot of senior forward Jason
DeJonge as the Knights extended their win streak to three games with a
2-1 victory at regionally-ranked Ohio Northern Wednesday afternoon in
Ada, Ohio. A native of Muskegon and a graduate of Western Michigan
Christian High School, DeJonge scored his sixth and seventh goals of the
year to lead the Knights to come-from-behind triumph over the Polar
Bears (3-3-0), ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Region.

After a scoreless first half, Ohio Northern got on the scoreboard first
as Brendon Thompson scored on an assist from Adam Waltz 11 minutes into
the second half. Calvin knotted the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute
however as DeJonge took a lead pass from senior Jon VerMerris (Western
Michigan Christian) and slammed a shot into the back of the net.

Less than two minutes later, senior Brian Douma (Redmond, WA) sent
DeJonge off on a clean breakaway with a nifty chest pass. With a
one-on-one situation on the ONU goalkeeper, DeJonge made no mistake and
slipped the ball into the net to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage with
just over 20 minutes left in regulation.

Calvin (3-3-0) held on from that point with junior goaltender Matt
Thelen (Grand Haven) turning in another superb effort with several
clutch saves down the stretch. Thelen finished the game with seven
saves while his counterpart Mike Gee had one save in nets for Ohio
Northern. Ohio Northern also held a 20-7 shots at goal advantage.

Calvin closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Friday
when it hosts non-conference and cross-town rival Aquinas at 4:00 pm at
Calvin Field. The visiting Saints have received several votes this year
in the pre-season NAIA men's soccer national poll and were 4-1-2 heading
into a Wednesday afternoon contest with Wolverine-Hoosier foe Indiana
    Tech.

    -end-
