CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, September 9, 2000
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin earned its second consecutive victory with a 2-0 triumph over
Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. The
contest was part of the Wendy's Classic exchange tournament with Hope.
Hope took first in the tournament by virtue of goal differential as the
Flying Dutchmen defeated Spring Arbor 4-0 Saturday in Holland.
Calvin dominated play throughout the game but maintained just a
one-goal edge until the closing seconds as the Knights struggled to
finish against MSE's off-side trap defensive tactics.
Junior Joel Tlachac continued his strong early-season play as he gave
the Knights a 1-0 lead on a rebound shot with just under 15 minutes left
in the first half. Tlachac then fed senior Jason DeJonge (Western
Michigan Christian) for the clinching goal with just 25 seconds left in
regulation. The goal was the fifth of the weekend for DeJonge.
Calvin outshot the visiting Raiders 23-6 with sophomore Justin Bouw
(Unity Christian) and junior Matt Thelen splitting time in nets to
collect the shutout win.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it journeys to Ohio Northern
for a 4:00 pm contest in Ada, Ohio.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin suffered its third consecutive defeat, falling 2-1 to cross-town
rival Aquinas Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field.
All of the scoring took place in the second half as the Saints scored
in the 52nd and 75th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Calvin countered with a
goal by junior Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian) in the 76th minute,
converting a pass from freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA). Calvin
continued to threaten in the closing minutes, nearly tying the game on a
corner kick play with six minutes left in regulation before Aquinas was
able to hold on for the victory.
Calvin outshot Aquinas 32-17 with sophomore goaltender Leah VanderPloeg
(Unity Christian) picking up 11 saves for the Knights in defeat.
Calvin is back in action on when it opens its MIAA campaign at Albion
in a game slated to start at 4:00 pm.
