I am writing regarding “Retired Calvin professor, WWII vet, receives his life’s ‘great honor’” (spring 2016). World War II veteran Steve Van der Weele ’49 is so many wonderful things, but at the top of the list of adjectives to describe him are humble, determined and tireless. Dr. Van der Weele is relentlessly dedicated to his faith and deserving of every accolade he receives, but more than that, he is an integral part of Calvin’s legacy. I am more than proud of Dr. Van der Weele, and in fact, he is the reason I attended Calvin. They could not have honored a better individual. Thank you for your service, Dr. Van der Weele!
