The Department of Geology, Geography and Environmental Studies invites you to a seminar on “The War for the West:  Public Lands and American Politics”.  Presenter Dr. Jamie Skillen is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, Calvin College.

Brief Summary:  The 2016 armed standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, OR is simply the latest skirmish in a pattern of sagebrush rebellions, in which public land users and western states have challenged federal authority over western lands and resources. Skillen explains how these rebellions shifted from a regional conflict over lands and resources to a microcosm of American politics.
